Are there any supporters whom would like to discuss how this season went from starting so well to so bad? This part of the club's history has left a haunting memory? Was it lack of ability? In fighting?

The ex Tasmanian/Essendon player Peter Daniel was the coach who are after winning his first 2 games of the season lost about the next 10 in a row before being given the flick and replaced by former Claremont player Fairclough who may have been the football director at the time but he didnt fair much better.
From memory AR Subi just didnt have the cattle in the early 80's especially compared to the SD, C, SF powerhouses at that time although good young players like Keene, D.Lamb, B.Taylor, Wilkinson, Zanotti, Dean, MacNish, C.Brown et al were all blooded around that era.
It wasnt until Bunts took over the coaching reins next season & the likes of Carlile took control off the field that Subi started to get their act together!

If I remember correctly Brian Fairclough also won the first two games he coached before returning to the poor form of the year. Always remember winning the first two games under Daniels and everyone thought this was it, the re-emergence of the lions. Then in the third game against powerhouse SF a huge crowd turned up to Subiaco and we got flogged. Pretty much down hill from there on....until the messiah returned in 84.

BH:: thanks for writing. I think you have summed it up pretty well. We sort of had the edifice of a side with all those players you mentioned, hence the couple of early wins, but goodness me they could diabolical at times. The three other clubs you mentioned were really good: although, in terms of premierships, South and Claremont under- performed from 1979-1984. Do you have a favourite swans side from the early 80s?

oobisubi: thanks for writing back also. I also remember the two early wins under Fairclough, I got carried away after that again; we would make the four and this and that; the whole bloody team never got a kick for the rest of the year. Oh well.
Can you remember whom kicked 10.1 in one of our few wins?

That would have been Clint Brown in one of Faircloughs two consecutive wins against either EP or WP.

Good topic Arkroyal. I had a look through Subiaco's results for that year and what struck me was how high scoring most of their games were. Most of the high scores were kicked against Subiaco, but in the four games they won, Subi reached 20 goals three of those times. So you would suggest that they had enough scoring power but their defence was a bit leaky! I was actually quite amazed to see how many games overall in that year had 35 + goals kicked by both teams, it was an exciting season ( especially for us Swannies supporters :) )

South Fremantle took a particular liking to kicking cricket scores against Subiaco as they managed a staggering 80 goals in 3 games
Claremont scored 37 - 19 - 241 in round 18 to beat them by 166 points and Swans scored 26 - 22 (178) the next week to win by 140 points. Apart from these slaughters Subiaco were quite competitive in many games and beat East Fremantle who made the finals in 1983.

1983 was the last bleak year for Subiaco for some time as in 1984 they won 9 games leading into a prolonged period of success in the late 80's

yep oobisoobi I think we were luck the following week against WP

waflfootyfacts: thanks for the link -- I did indeed enjoy seeing it again. He (Brown) had 17 kicks in the game, a day out. Also, I am often on your site and really appreciate it.

Thanks Mikeh: I would agree with all of your observations about the dreaded Lions of that time. We managed 17 goals at Bassendean in the first series, but still lost by six goals or so. I suppose given the status of SD at the time this was a reasonable performance, but a defeat is a defeat. In regards to the performances against South and one against Claremont, just terrible. Makes you wonder, if even given the limitations of the team, there were divisions in the club. Overall, I think Perth were unlucky to get the wooden spoon that year; they won a game less than us, but were more competitive.

Which your favourite Swans side from the early 80s?

No worries, thought I'd throw I out a link, the early 80's were the highest scoring seasons on record.

Subi' defense certainly leaked in 1983, there're average against was the 7th highest ave against - another link to season records page highest average points against.
