Dirty Weekender wrote: A little off topic here Ark but what are your recollections of the Subi player Bret Hutchison in the 80's. I believe he played a bit of footy at Melbourne but that's about all I know.

From memory I think Hutchinson was seeing Tania Armstrong during his Subi days DW!

Now there's a topic/list that might spark a bit of interest BH...not sure if the moderators would allow it thou

all either left the club or played little football for whatever reason -- and in a club which only finished 5th in 1981, you can't expect to cope with losing nearly half a team. Also, the 1983 team had more talent because of the young players whom Armstrong introduced the year before.

Yes Ark I thought we were in for a good year after our 81 effort. Couldn't believe the losses when I heard.

Found my old Ardmona footycards from '81. Says that Munza played for Footscray and came to subi via Darwin. No mention of the construction worker myth. Might post on Lost WAFL to see if anyone remembers him.

Munza would've been a far better player if he learned to stay on his feet more, he constantly dived for marks & then fell to ground no chance of a second effort. Luckily he had such strong hands that he marked alot of them.

...and a better player if he could kick straight. He could of got close to 100 goals in one year if he did not spray it so muck. May have something to do with those sight issues mentioned in an earlier post.

With all of this reminiscing about Peter Munro do any of you Subi boys also remember Brendan McFaull who played up forward for Subi around this time 82/83?

Yeah, I remember him being a bit on the heavy side. lol

This era has reminded me of players who wore glasses on the field. Unthinkable now but back then there were some in the WAFL and SANFL.

Geoff Blethyn and Dalton Gooding are two who come to mind. Apparently Munro should have.

Yeah we were grasping at straws back then. "Desperate" I think is the right word.

In the end things only got better when the likes of Dean, Breman, Mort, D Lamb, Keene, Scott, MacNish, Georgiades, Zanotti, Wilkinson, O'Loughlin, etc come through the local ranks in combination with some long term servants like N & B Taylor, P Lamb, Brown, Featherby etc.

That's not to underestimate the efforts of Willet, Crutchfield, Hutchinson, Sparks etc who come to the club but they were the icing on the cake rather than the cake itself.

Laurie Keene not getting a sustained injury free run at our game still sucks. What a player
