Dont get confused as many did between Bret HutchiNson and Glen Hutcheson - I think thats how it went. Bret was silky smooth. I remember him acting as team runner for a spell quite a while later - thinking that the guy should pull a jumper back on and he wouldn't have been out of place. Isn't Bret a director?

I had always known that story of Munro working in construction and deciding to have a go. I didnt know it was the stand though -maybe the hospital or something like that?

Found my old Ardmona footycards from '81. Says that Munza played for Footscray and came to subi via Darwin. No mention of the construction worker myth. Might post on Lost WAFL to see if anyone remembers him.

Munza would've been a far better player if he learned to stay on his feet more, he constantly dived for marks & then fell to ground no chance of a second effort. Luckily he had such strong hands that he marked alot of them.

...and a better player if he could kick straight. He could of got close to 100 goals in one year if he did not spray it so muck. May have something to do with those sight issues mentioned in an earlier post.

Yeah a terrible kick.

Hutcheson was a more classy player...

I think that Munro did go to ground a wee bit, but then again, from listening to some of the commentary of the day, he was quite often being throttled by the resident full back. His best performance was a 6.7 against an out-of-form EF side in round 7 1980. He kicked 61 goals, and it is true, what other members have stressed: had he been an accurate kick he would have been a chance for 100 goals playing in a club which won only two games -- and one of those was by a bloody point over the luckless WP.

Edit: Hutch makes a decent wine for those who do like a tipple. His label is Vintners Edge which he produces out of his Margaret River vineyard retailing at $12 - $13 per bottle, you won't find much better on the market in the price range and swear to god he has not put me up to plugging his product here. The SSB is the star in the stable but seriously all his wines stand up well and deliver bang for ur buck. Hit him up for a sample bottle next time you Subi blokes see him around the club, surely he'll oblige being the cracking bloke he is. :)

I spoke with Hutchy behind the goals during the Tiggers game at the showgrounds when we last got beaten.
He still looks similar to when he played and we had a chat about the finals and the flag in 1988 in which he played. I remember we got smacked in the 2nd semi against the Tiggers and came back and gave them a belting in the GF. I think it was one of the biggest turnarounds in WAFL finals history - Has anyone got any figures for me ???
He was a great pick-up and played ruck rover I think from memory ??? Good skills and ran well - you'd have to trying to keep ahead of Gary Kemp who was forever running in circles and chipping it backwards LOL.

Munro was great to watch - His late side bumps and body work using his hips before he marked the ball was as good as I've ever seen. He was one of the reasons us poor old Subi supporters could still smile while getting hammered each week.

all either left the club or played little football for whatever reason -- and in a club which only finished 5th in 1981, you can't expect to cope with losing nearly half a team. Also, the 1983 team had more talent because of the young players whom Armstrong introduced the year before.

Yes Ark I thought we were in for a good year after our 81 effort. Couldn't believe the losses when I heard.

Ray Reeves was Subi's Mr tough guy - Blonde hair and tats never took a backward step running of a half back flank.

Yeah, I remember him being a bit on the heavy side. lol

This era has reminded me of players who wore glasses on the field. Unthinkable now but back then there were some in the WAFL and SANFL.

Geoff Blethyn and Dalton Gooding are two who come to mind. Apparently Munro should have.

Haha yeah that was my memory of him as well LH ..he came from Hawthorn i think like a few boys did at Subi in that time- Douge, Cook, McFaull ..could have been the David Parkin link maybe?

Hep big Brendan was carrying a tad too much. Not very quick (not a refferance to Barry Quik)Used his bulk well when required but from memory he use to ruck a bit although not overly tall. I think he would rest in the forward line when rucking with big bad bearded Vic Melville??? Did Brendan have a moustacha at one stage ???

Vic Melville ...now there's a name that has bobbed up in the news of late!

Ray Reeves was a rugged half back for Subi ..from memory his missus trained a few pacers with success back in the 80/90's.
