A pacy hard at it player from Melbourne, he played a lot of good footy for us. Would've definitely been one of the first picked every week...

Hi Dirty W: Hi -- Hutchinson played for a couple of years from 87, maybe a bit longer; wingman, good pace pretty good skill; useful player; I tend to understate things too. He certainly played a bit for the grand old flag in Victoria, as you mentioned. Does that help?

DG: I always respected the 82 team: we were within a kick two or two three times and never lost by 25 goals -- 15 goals once; that team had less talent:
Buckenera
Hamilton
Schultz
Reeves
Fussell
Munro
Murray
Melville

all either left the club or played little football for whatever reason -- and in a club which only finished 5th in 1981, you can't expect to cope with losing nearly half a team. Also, the 1983 team had more talent because of the young players whom Armstrong introduced the year before.

Thanks for the replies here fellas. I know Hutch as a winemaker and not as a footballer so thought I'd ask. Sounds like he could go a bit in his day

Edit: Hutch makes a decent wine for those who do like a tipple. His label is Vintners Edge which he produces out of his Margaret River vineyard retailing at $12 - $13 per bottle, you won't find much better on the market in the price range and swear to god he has not put me up to plugging his product here. The SSB is the star in the stable but seriously all his wines stand up well and deliver bang for ur buck. Hit him up for a sample bottle next time you Subi blokes see him around the club, surely he'll oblige being the cracking bloke he is. :)

I recall Brett Hutchinson may have even been drafted by the Eagles...may be wrong.

Peter Munro...now there is a name...did not play far from the goal square but took some courageous marks. One of my all time favourites. Anyone know his background....I was told he was working on the building of the two tier grandstand when he asked if he could try out at sub training....may be an urban myth.

I was told that Munro's eyesight was very poor, so much so that he once tried to mark a low flying bird. Could be another urban myth perhaps

But like you say he was an amazing mark and an unorthodox and mercurial player.

Found my old Ardmona footycards from '81. Says that Munza played for Footscray and came to subi via Darwin. No mention of the construction worker myth. Might post on Lost WAFL to see if anyone remembers him.

From memory I think Hutchinson was seeing Tania Armstrong during his Subi days DW!

BH: your a bit similar, as the 1981 finals effort was a farce

But I liked the 1980 side which went 18 games undefeated. My favourite player was Mike Smith. A question for both: would John Todd have been under pressure at the end of 1981?

Subi: I vaguely remember the financial struggles of the club around 1980 or so. I remember all those names you mentioned BH, all gave good service along with Neil Taylor Phil Lamb Dwayne Lamb and Rod Brown ( an ex SD I believe)

The money situation did not turn around until the club got $200,000 in 1982 for Buckenara. We then had the good luck to develop a good team when Western Underwriters put up $400,000 if we made the finals and won a flag.

the club got 200 grand for Bucky? in 1982, is that for real?

Lucky for Subi a good club like Hawthorn signed Bucky as Swans are still waiting for the full transfer fees from Footscray & St Kilda for Beasley, Narkle & Sidebottom respectively some 30+ years later!
