it is an over re-action; you can also, as freezin pointed out, catch the flu going to the soccer and die -- all this type of exercise does is spread panic.

Not in Italy mate. They have the highest rate of infection outside of China.

Maybe so but this is a new virus strain in fact I've read China has discovered two different strains of it so there are no vaccines for this yet. It's a massive cost to the health system and the economy. China wouldn't shut down thousands of factories if it was no worse or less harmful than the flu, of which there are hundreds of strains.

read this old son, it relates to italy and how it is hitting the aged; hence, there is no need to spread panic across the entire population. Do people want the economy to tank on here?

In relation to China, their high rate of death can also be put down, in part, because it too has an ageing population due to the 'one child policy'.

The death rate world world is just 3.5 per cent.

DD....Influenza A and B did the damage last flu season mate, resulted in over 61 000 deaths, affected 42 million folk, hospitalizing 647 000 of them....majority of deaths were the elderly and people with a bunch of pre existing co-morbidities...e.g. obesity, diabetes, CVD etc....Corona Virus has been around since the 60s mainly the alpha and beta strains...COVID 19 is indeed a new strain, but getting hyped way more than it needs to be....how sustainable is it to have closed sporting events, concerts, schools, uni's closed?...won't last for long, money is money and money makes the world go round....the majority will always over rule the minority...this year it's COVID 19....in a couple of years it will be something else....but every year there is the Influenza virus just doing its thing...picking off regular numbers without the COVID 19 fanfare...can't police every eventuality....and people just need to be more accountable with how they live their lives...but that will never happen because every one has their own agenda and come end of the day it will never ever happen to moi...until it does.

100 per cent correct Freezin; it is completely unsustainable, people need to listen to their doctor, keep an eye on the elderly and sick, whom are vulnerable and, some of the media, and show a bit of bottle by living their lives.

Using Freezin's figures the death rate for the flu was around 2 per cent.

I get a bit bemused when I read where we must change our life style and do things like wash your hands after using the toilet, before eating etc, etc. Also, covering your mouth if you cough or sneeze. Aren't these normal everyday action? Certainly was what I was taught when I was a kid or if you didn't you'd cop a bollocking from adults. Our workplace is littered with all the written advice on hand washing etc. Maybe subsequent generations have let fundamental personal hygiene dwindle over the years?

Has Freo opened up a dangerous precedent here getting a player tested for COVID 19, even though the player didn't meet the Health department stringent COVID 19 testing criteria? What makes this fella different from Joe Public who wants to be tested?...

I think you are all missing the point about how infectious corona virus actually can be.

Unlike influenza it can be spread by individuals who have absolutely no symptoms at all and it can rip through any location with people in attendance. It is even worse in hospitals and old aged centres and areas where large numbers of older aged people are gathered.

I have summarized as follows:
(1) Globally, about 3.4% of reported COVID-19 cases have died,” the influenza fatality rate of less than 1%.

(2) Worldwide, there were 110,588 COVID-19 cases and 3,841 deaths as of Monday morning;

(3) Whilst no deaths have occurred in those aged 9 years and younger, those in those aged 70 to 79 years had an 8% fatality rate and those aged 80 years and older had a fatality rate of 14.8%.

(4) The fatality rate was 49% among critical cases, and elevated among those with pre-existing conditions: 10.5% for people with cardiovascular disease, 7.3% for diabetes, .3% for chronic respiratory disease, 6% for hypertension, and 5.6% for cancer.

(5) Corona Viruses are far more contagious than influenza. Examples of a single patient spreading the virus to health-care workers after a very short time of exposure or on public transport again after a very limited time of exposre abound. That does not happen with influenza.

(6) Corona Viruses are zootonic and can be spread from animals to people. The danger is that we DO NOT know whether the corona virus will mutate again and start affecting much younger people. I wouldn't want to be the politician who called that incorrectly

(7) Until we have a cure and AND the case evidence to back it up (add another 6 month's) to ensure whatever we THINK will cure the corona virus we have no choice other than to take the most conservative approach possible.

(.8) In a recent sample of 138 hospitalized patients with confirmed novel coronavirus–infected pneumonia in Wuhan, China, presumed hospital-related transmission of 2019-nCoV was suspected in 41% of patients, 26% of patients received ICU care, and [the] mortality was 4.3%.

(9) A single infected person can cause absolute havoc. That does not happen with influenza!
