Well now that the two interclub games are out of the way the build up until round one kicks up a gear with two scratch matches against Subiaco at Lathlain on Saturday March 7 and East Fremantle at Shark Park on Saturday March 14.

A couple of things I noticed from the interclub match on Friday.
  • The players do seem to be fitter. We will be able to get a better idea of just how much when the start to play other teams I spose.
  • The skill level demonstrated on Friday night was very poor. Hopefully it was just one of those nights but if this is a precedent for the season ahead then expect a lot of turnovers.
  • Rowan Garlett looks a lot taller than I remember and has also got some size about him. He isn't massive but from what I saw of him on Friday night he showed some good signs and his one that I will watch closely over the next two games to see how he goes. If he continues to do well then he maybe in line for a round one call up.
  • Two new ruckman in Richard Wallis and Rhys Ironmonger. Both battled hard and it will be interesting to see how they go against the Lions and Sharks. Ironmonger looked like he was able to do more around the ground.

Bring on the Lions this Saturday.

Cody Leggett, Sam Garstone and Daniel Arangio stood out for me in Friday night's intraclub. Marty Walley I thought did some good things as well.

Good to see Dene White running laps.

I actually thought the kicking was pretty good. They've been focusing on raising the standard over the pre-season and I reckon there has been a discernible improvement. Its a far cry from the previous fraud of a coach who had them endlessly running up and down the ground around witches hats doing "match simulation".

Both Garstone and Arangio have kicked goals at other levels. If they can step up to league (both 20 or 21) if memory serves me right, then this would help our cause. Where did Garlett play? Up forward? What did our tall defenders look like?

I won't be able to make next week's scratch match, so would really appreciate some game summaries. Maybe even a team list... Is Walley signed up? Are Ironmonger and Wallis mature or young? Is either likely to contest Eyres for number 1 ruck?

Spot on as usual Dazzler. My impression has been that the group is far fitter than in a long time and kicking skills much improved. Now that has to be translated to onfield competitive performance.
I agree re comparison to previous regime.. like chalk and cheese.

If we are fitter then are 2 conclusions to make.
1. The regime is better, goals and implementation.
2. The players are committed to the goals and implementation.

In other words previous coaches probably too soft.
Time will tells.

Yes time for some of the youngsters to step up.
That means that they must be given the chance.
Maybe ES is the person to provide the opportunities and to guide them in the right direction.
Let's hope so.

Of course this is my own HO and should not be construed to be the opinion of any other person or persons living or dead.
Or any organisation.

Leggett and Arangio did show some good signs for me and both IMO need to be given more opportunities. I didn't think Garstone was too impressive, although he did seem to have bulked up a little bit.

Marty Walley I remember seeing at Christmas and thought he looked like someone who kept themselves in pretty good knick. Will keep more of an eye out for him against Subiaco.

I did not attend the first inter club game but from what I saw at the second inter club game the skills were not very good. Granted some players did hit their targets but majority were making basic skill errors within 10-20 metres of their target and dropping marks that you would expect to be taken at this level. Hopefully it was like a lot of preseason games at this stage of the year and players were just shaking off a bit of rustiness or blowing out the cobwebs etc... Like I said previously we will get a better gage from when we play proper opposition in Subiaco and East Fremantle.

Quality opposition, but still very difficult to gage much from preseason. aka carlton and brisbane of late.
Victorians still laugh at West Aussies because of the way we bailed out the vfl and then allowed it to be called it the AFL!

TFAF what's Carlton and Brisbane got to do with this?

Also if you have been to any of the inter club games, who has stood out in your opinion?
