Just found this on another website, says 100% what i dont have the capacity ( or time) to write. ( written by a Vic by the way)
No, I'm with you. Top level sport isn't sport any more. Let's face it, it hasn't been for a while now. But it's got to the point of just not being much fun either.
When the AFL sent Fitzroy to the wilderness, everyone said "its more a business than a sport nowadays!" But people could still see some point to a business like arrangement.
But now. It's just so polluted by every other 'interest' group other than the pure sport itself, it's unrecognisable. For one, the gambling industry has taken footy by the throat and is shaking it down for every cent it and it's fans are worth. People ring up talk back and whine about clubs changing their team lists at the last minute and making the gambling aspect of footy non-transparent and not above board. I can't reconcile with this aspect of footy alone! Someone takes a gamble and is supposed to be guaranteed a fair go somehow? It's a ludicrous notion that everyone now thinks is normal.
Then sponsors, once a vital side element of the game are allowed to ram down our throats their cruddy products whether we like it or wherever and whenever they like. They have the RIGHT to do this don't you know.
Then all the old boys dodgy arrangements. Wasn't it Evans who owned the catering company that supplies the AFL stadiums?
Then there's the stupid draw of this so called 'competition'. It's not a competition. it's a money making venture for those in control of the rich clubs.
Then there's the expansion teams that no one gives the remotest of cruds about. And the 'sport' suffers for it. And the fans of the teams that made the 'sport' what it is suffer for it.
And there's probably dozens of other examples I could go on about if I had the energy.
And today. Oh rue the day. Oh woe for the day. The AFL had the most glaring chance for nobility it's ever had. And it blatantly chose the unfathomable and illogical path that just confirms that the word 'sport' has NO place when mentioning the AFL.
Ironically, it was something Jobe Watson said today that struck a chord with me. Something along the lines of 'I just want to get back to playing the game we loved as kids'. It really saddened me, because as soon I as heard the verdict, any passion I had was knocked out of me like getting a kick in the guts and being winded. And then I hear Watson talking about a love for the game.
I always thought I could imagine how the old Fitzroy supporters felt. But it was today when I lost the passion for the game that I've come to realise just how sapped they must have been. The game that I forever held as the best spectator sport by a mile bar none is now something I might watch with a shrug and move on the next thing in front of my face.
Todays decision was pathetic. And why did McLachlan come out just before it and pre-empt it publicly? And how did Tim Watson know enough inside knowledge to pre-empt the result so confidently. He bloody well knew what was being handed down, which stinks in itself.
And what of their concern for organised crime 'infiltrating' the AFL. My GOD!! They just ENDORSED a program run by these types. The clouds parted, the sun shone down and the AFL had the opportunity to do something magnificent for this game and make it worthy again. Instead, they dropped their dacks and took a massive dump.
I'm so over the AFL. They have just confirmed that all they really care about is the rich Vic clubs and the expansion clubs. If Bulldogs, Saints, or Roos win the flag it will only be by miraculous fluke. You may as well add us to that list to sadly.
