That last hour encapsulated the reason that I love test cricket. Good to see England show a bit of the old bulldog spirit. The Australians pushed hard but ultimately would have loved another 10 overs to finish the job off. The weather and Cummins late declaration were factors in them not getting that extra time. Overall though it was great to see some genuine tense combative cricket which has been sorely lacking in this series.
Looking ahead to the Hobart test, my sense is that Ussie will be opening with Warner and Head will come back into the middle order. Harris has not made the most of the starts that he has got in this series, Khawaja has, its as simple as that. Starc could probably use a rest but he is very effective in pink ball tests so that will complicate the decision. Would like to see Jhye have another chance though. Boland has been unbelievable and must continue in the team.
England have a good opener in Crawley and they have to give this guy an extended run. Hameed has to go, maybe Malan to open and Root at 3?  Then they could bring in either Lawrence or Pope or maybe Woakes to bat at 7 if Stokes can't bowl. With Buttler out, the replacement Billings could bat at 6. I don't think Anderson or Broad would want to be rested for a pink ball test so I think they will go in with a similar bowling attack to Sydney.

No way Khawaja can be dropped after making a century in both innings.
He can move to open as he has done successfully in the past and Head can come back in at 5 meaning Bailey's lovechild Harris is finally dropped.
It is not as though he hasnt had any opportunities he has played 15 Tests as a specialist Batsman (opener) and only averages 25 and no centuries and only 3 50s.
Can anyone name me another specialist batsman who has had that many chances and hasnt scored a hundred and averages 25 or less?
The other change I would make is Starc out for Richardson, as Starc looks like he is running on empty and barely fired a shot in this Test especially in the 2nd innings in which he was bowling on 130 odd km/h way down on his normal pace of 140-150km/h.

On the money BH, with the 5 tests so close together, Starc is nearly cooked, so Richardson should come in. Normally we have much longer breaks between test so the bowlers get more recovery time, but with covid ......

How in hell can Starc be picked for 5 tests....regardless if he is a pink ball specialist, all his previous efforts with the pink ball have been early on in a test series when fresh.....the guy is cooked, the Sydney test clearly showed that, even Cummins looked off, but lifted in that last spell with two crucial wickets....what did Starc deliver....fark all......hopefully the selectors actually stand their ground and say you have done well Mitch, time for a spell......

I dont disagree with you about Starc looking cooked in Sydney Freeze but just watching the highlights from the 4th Test I couldnt believe how many catches we dropped (and a missed run out by Carey) most of which were off Starc's bowling.
I honestly reckon we have had a lot of luck this series, be it England's woeful selections from management and their poor batting bar Sydney, because our batting hasnt been great either!
I still say Labushagne & Smith are out of knick, Warner got away to a decent start in the series due to England not picking his nemesis Broad but has looked shaky since he came back, Harris just isnt up to Test Cricket, Green has looked uncertain, whilst I have voiced my concerns about Carey both with gloves and bat!

Starc has 15 wickets too this series & has made some good runs batting at 9 with 3 NO's from 5 digs at 75 isn't too bad....

Not disputing Starc's efforts in the series, he has played his part, both with bat n ball....just the same signs are reappearing from last year.....got two fresh guys in the sheds, only reason why Starc will play is because Aust are 3/0 up....be interested if the scoreline was like last year 1-1....would Starc play? Being a pink ball test will also go in Starc's favour.....happy to be proved wrong and the fella takes a 5 for.....just not expecting it to happen.....why does Lyon need to play?......how many overs is the guy going to get to bowl?....especially in Hobart being a day/night test......

Sounds like there's some doubt about Boland being fit for the test, if he doesn't come up it opens the door for Richardson and would probably mean that Starc keeps his spot.
