Unka2 what was your view on Friday night when you heard an umpire talking to the channel 7 commentators during the game?

Bl00dy disgrace s42. They have enough trouble getting deisions right, dont lumber them with another distraction. Also its a SPORT not a bl00dy realoty show.

Narrow minded view, they did not over do it, the one I saw he explained the free kick/incident which they it the box could not fathom, along with about 1/2 the viewing audience of games who have no idea of the laws.

If the rules were A) logical to understand and B) consistant, they we would never need any of this bulltish. Get the rules and interpretations right, rather than being "wise" AFTER the event.IF they rules were half intelligent we wouldn't need any explanations,as it would be plain for all to understand. How amusing though, the umpire can talk to commentators, who have no impact on the game,BUT dare a player dispute or query the decision he could well be on the end of a 50 metre penatly. AFL becoimg more like a GAME than a sport everyday. sad really. Even if the audience had an idea of the rules of the game it would matter not anyway,as they are so vague, and open to interpretation

Yes Unka, it is not different laws, it is the way they are interpreted on the field, caused from the Lawmakers changing the laws. I'm with you I get frustrated when watching AFL these days because one minute something is a kick, and one minute it is not.

I'm a neutral supportor but the other week could not believe Petrie was not awarded a free kick when Jamieson was all over him like a rash all night.

Creditabilty back on ;)

At least in the WAFL, the umps may be crap, BUT they at least dont have so many interpretations/rules that the AFL has (yet its still the same game, how does that work).
nowadays watching AFL when the whistle blows i watch the umpire now, in years gone by i would hear the whistle, and "KNOW" what was coming and could watch the players, now i have NO idea. Holding decisions deliberate out of bounds/ruck infringements/ harmless bumps off the ball, illegal disposal etc etc, I HAVE NO IDEA. This coming from 50 years of watching the game.

No way in the world yolo. There are certain Melbourne clubs that are sacrosanct. In fact the media would smile and say their supporters were just having a bit of boyish fun. Unfortunately, it's the footy world we live in, so we have to suck it up and move on.

Not a narrow minded view at all. I have absolutely no problem with umpires having to explain their decisions at the apprpriate time. What is not an appropriate time is when they should be fully focused on the footy and not listening to a commentator asking them a question and then for them to recall why they gave a particular decision or non-decision. The umpires seemingly are incapable of seeing a blatant holding or push in the back when they are 100% concentrating on what they are supposed to be doing.

It is symptomatic of what is wrong with the umpiring fraternity today. Whereas there was an old saying that the umpires had done a good job if you didn't notice them. There credo today is 'we are the centre of the universe' Ozymandias style.

technology is to blame with umpires. they are miked up, which is only an ego extension for them. and that is the last thing this sport needs. umpires should never be miked up. they seem to talk way way too much, and the reason for that would be because they like to listen to themselves on tv. i have no doubt about that, and as a result they are not totally focused on what they are doing in my opinion.

also this ridiculous thing today with goal umpires wearing cameras on their heads. i just dont get this. firstly how distracting would this be for goal umpires, and secondly the camera view for the audience is terrible anyway. i think authorities broadcasting football are getting too cute with themselves. umpires should never be involved in this rubbish.

Agreed Jardine. Just let the orange/green/red/whatever maggots do their job without stupid camera angles and mics.
With the way things are progressing, it wont be long until the viewers at home can vote yes or not for third umpire decisions!

:) They should use the DRS at the Footy.. Review every free kick and if the players thought the umpire had missed one they should have a review system where they could stop the game and have the third umpire have a look..
This message represents the official view of the voices in my head
