To be honest Kurtis Patterson should have been the number 6 batsman chosen last summer before one day-20/20 specialists Maddinson & Ferguson who were horribly exposed.
Much like Jackson Bird should have been picked on that green seamer at Bellerive instead of feckin Joe Mennie.
Rod Marsh ended up taking the fall but how the other selectors like Mark Waugh have not been held to account for some of these complete blunders defies logic....maybe the baggy blue cap philosophy not only applies to players?!

See the situation in NSW where Ed Cowan has been dumped from their side for the first three games. The whisper is some in the team that have Australian experience are pushing for Daniel Hughes to be included

Is that a hint at who may bat 6 for Australia in the ashes??????

6. Maxwell (VIC)
7. Nevill (NSW) (wk)
8. Starc (NSW) ☆

BH you forgot to add Wade to that highlighted list.....I just hope Lehmann et al pick that 6th batsman on four day form not the one day stuff....so be it if it is Mitch or Shaun, just make sure they are scoring big runs in the long day format....too many times these two get picked on cameos at the shorter form....Hughes or Head or Patterson.....with Carey or Nevill keeping....

I personally think Maddinson is an absolute crab but the selectors & greater public seem to rate him highly for some reason

Only the NSW public & media rate him BH.
His footwork or lack of more like it was horribly exposed in the Test arena last summer!

Does Steve Smith have to much power - see below from the age website - It was Smith that played a roll in Ed Cowan not getting picked for NSW even though he is the current state player of the year (Steve Waugh Medallist) and the highest run scorer in the shield over the past three seasons. Smith did something similar recently getting games into O'Keefe in India when he is banned from state cricket. I think if the captain isn't a selector - which is what they tried and agreed failed then Smith cant make these calls, thought.....Maybe this is who will bat 6 for Australia in the first test.

NSW batsman Daniel Hughes is a potential Test player, according to Steve Smith, who admits he was involved in the 28-year-old's selection ahead of Ed Cowan for the first Sheffield Shield match of the season.

I think it sets a very dangerous precedent with the Australian captain influencing who does and doesnt play for his state. Ed Cowan was the top run scorer in Shield last year and is younger than Chris Rogers was when he made his successful return to the Test team in 2013. It is not out of the realms of possibility that with a good start to the season Cowan could have come into calculations for Australian selection. We will never know that now because Ed has been replaced by a guy with a very good limted overs average but a modest first class record. There is also talk of WA not selecting Michael Klinger in the Warriors team becuase of the number of other players competing for a test spot. Runs and wickets should be the only currency when selecting any team. The last time I remember angst like this over selections in an Australian summer was the ashes season of 2010- 11 and we all know how that ended.
