S.R Waugh's bowlling average in tests was 37, ridiculously high for and all-rounder; he was carried full stop which is why I will never put him in lhe top players.

Lest everyone thinks I am being harsh about Australia's achievements of 1989, I would just add that one could analyze the 1986-7 series the same way. It was an achievement by Gatting's lot to win the Ashes out here, but can one really rate the runs and wickets that the Englishmen made and took respectively against such a poor Aussie side?

Thank god we did persevere with S.R Waugh as he turned out to be some batsman and he did show some glimpses in those 27 Tests a very nice 90 odd against the all conquering WI at the Gabba batting at 3 in 88/89 being one such occasion.
I can categorically say none of Head, Maddinson, Ferguson et al are not nor will they ever be in S.R Waugh's class!

The thing about Waugh was that, as people have pointted out, he made himself in to a very good player. Great players, however do not bat at five and six for most of their career, nor do they force lesser batsmen, such as his brother to bat above him.

Hopefully that et al list of yours includes Catrwrigjt, Bancroft and S Marsh too BH...considering Maddinson has a similar average and aggregate to S Waugh after the same number of tests in their respective test careers how do you or anyone honestly knows Maddison won't be better?....TBH for Australian to be half decent again they certainly need another Steve Waugh accumulator sitting at 5 or 6.....who gives a fark who it is or which state they come from...as long as someone steps up.

Steve Waugh carried! Turn it up your kidding aren't ya!! Hilarious
And I would consider a bowling average of 37 pretty bloody good for a bloke who averaged 50 with the bat and made runs on all pitches in all conditions!

you think what you like Tiger -- but you have no clue what an all-rounder is. Keep in mind it was you whom describbed him as an all-rounder. Have a look at Miller's record or Kallis' record and then write to me about all rounders. In relation to him being an all-rounder from 27 tests he took 39 wickets. To his credit he took 13 wickets in two tests, but that means that in the other 25 tests he took just 26 wickets. Those are not the figures of a test all-rounder.

On the point about Waugh being carried, I will state it again: Steve Waugh ranks third in terms of the number of tests taken before he finally made his first triple figure. Now I would have thought tiger, that part of the cricket description of someone whom bats in the top six is to make a century?

Here is a list of centuryless players whom the selectors have indulgged over the years:

Kenny Mackay 37 tests
RB Simpson 29 tests
SR Waugh 27 tests
Bruce Laird 21 tests
Mitch Marsh 21 tests
Graeme Hole 18 tests
Michael Bevan 18 tests
Shane Watson 15 tests
David Hookes 13 tests
Andrew Symonds 11 tests
John Dyson 11 tests -- he then made two hunderds and then nothing for his last 15 tests

Michael Bevan had the best first-class figures of any batsmen to never er make a test hundred
Julian Weiner had the worst first-class figures of a top order batsmen never to make a test century.

And she can bowl to Freeze and is very good in the field, magnificent effort to knock up 213no after taking 3 for in the Poms 1st dig...and yes she is a fair sort too especially for NSW!!

Arkroyal if you think Steve Waugh was carried "full stop", that means carried his entire career, and you will never ever convince me on that one

Tiger: I don't need to convince you of anything sir. I was referring, clearly to his first four years or 27 tests, reference to the remainder of his career is only in your mind. He was a good player, a status confirmmed by his figures after 1989 and the bowllers he faced, such as, Ambrose.
