Yes - Boomers finally got the medal they wanted, its just a pity the Opals have fallen away. Watched the womens hockey final Netherlands and Argentina - the intensity they played at was a long way from the aussies.

AR our poor performance at the 1976 OG was the catalyst for the AIS in Canberra coming into being for developing elite sporting talent in selected sports.
Whether that has been ultimately successful is debateable especially for the cost as one could argue most of our successful talent at OG's have come from individual state centre's for their respective sports!

BH: history is full of ironies, mate, I agree; the GDR did well in 1976, and, yet a Tory government moved the country towards its communist model. Hockey should lose some of its estamites; keep in view, that Rhodesia  won a medal around this time -- with just 250, 000 whites -- and, most definitely, without a fancy hockey joint in Bentley.

AR I'm pretty sure this is Canada's best haul of Summer Olympics medals since LA 1984.When they had a really good swim team with Victor Davis ect.

When Zimbabwe won the gold medal in the women's hockey at the 1980 Olympics were there any countries that boycotted that event who had previously qualified?  Is that the explanation for why Zimbabwe participated in the event in the first place?
