don't be surprised if by 2021 there is a national reserves AFL comp and the eagles and dockers will play there.

Just my guess

Happy festivus to all you Seinfeld watchers......

If it's good enough to play Marsh Cup and shield games at the MCG, SCG, Adelaide Oval and the Gabba then it's also good enough to play the same at Optus. The $ they get for the WACA ground would be more than enough to offset the additional cost of playing at Optus over the foreseeable future. No other state has separate facilities for national and international footy and cricket and not sure why we do either.

BC that is not true every state has their main ground and another ground up to first class standard that they play some Sheffield Shield, Marsh Cup & Womens Cricket games on-

VIC- MCG + Junction Oval, Kardinia Park, Moe Oval
NSW- SCG + Drummoyne Oval, North Sydney Oval, Hurstville Oval, Bankstown Oval, Blacktown Oval, Newcastle Oval
QLD- GABBA + Allan Border Field, Metricon Stadium, Townsville (Tony Ireland Oval)
SA- Adelaide Oval + Karen Rolton Oval, Glenelg Oval
WA- Perth Stadium + WACA

It is about time the Feds tipped in some money into WA sporting stadia.

As for footy at the WACA I am pretty certain they are not looking at a WAFL club permanently based at the ground more likely a WAFL game a week or fortnight played at the ground more than likely on a Thursday or Friday night.

BH: I am with you on both: the WACA staying put and a game being played there each week. I am not sure every club made money when they played the Eagles? This would be the game to put at the WACA for each .

The ground is unique in a number of ways:

the pitch
the history -- it has seen 'a ten for' and 350 in a day by Barry Anderson Richards against a test attack --possibly the best ever first-class inninggs played in this country, certainly since the war.
the name speaks of cricket itself
the bloody scoreboard is the best manual scoreboard in the Commonnwealth of Australia, puts Adelaide's to shame. It is even colour coded.
the ground is also down by the river for the fremantle doctor at the height of summer
Border aslo said of the WACA, that it was like playing in another country to paraphrase him
also I am not a big fan of drop in pitches, which as we know tend to produce roadways

all good reasons to keep the joint

That may be the case BH but of the 30 Shield games played this year only 5 were played away from major venues in Vic and NSW and that was most likely because the MCG and SCG weren't available.

And BC that is why you need a second first class standard ground in each state as the likes of MCG, SCG, Perth Stadium, Adelaide Oval, GABBA are multi use stadia and used all year round for football, international sports, concerts etc and are not always available for every cricket match to be played on in which is a very busy, condensed cricket season that runs into and over footy season now (late September to early April).
And the WACA is that particular ground for WA.
Also the argument about cricket association completely relocating to Perth Stadium just wont happen as it is never the intention to have any sports club based there, hence why WCE had to look at another location for their base and eventually chose the nearby Lathlain Park precinct.

I would be sad to see the WACA disappear TBH. There is so much cricket history attached to the place as AR said. I know Subiaco Oval had to be demolished but I always feel a bit despondent when driving past there to see a big sandpit and remembering all the fantastic games of footy I have witnessed at the ground

Spot on Mike, who in their right mind would want WA sporting history to be bulldozed over and replaced with yet another boring apartment/office building.
Once you bowl these icons over they are gone forever and a day and all you are left with are memories.

That idea has been around for a while and has some appeal but only if they change to drop in pitches. Ch eagles would leave their broadcast infrastructure there permanently and cover a "game of the week" and all finals to be played at the WACA under lights, a nice 20k+ boutique stadium for finals will look so much better than a 3/4 empty Optus. Home team to get the gate receipts and some compensation for lost bar/catering revenue.

On another note what we have created in that East Perth/Burswood Peninsula area is a great little sporting and entertainment precinct now with the WACA, Gloucester Park, HBF Stadium (Perth Oval), Belmont Park, Perth Stadium & the Crown Entertainment Complex all within walking distance of one another now with the magnificent Matagarup Bridge over the picturesque Swan River.
