ArkRoyal wrote: DG Good post -- your right about 1996 being an unpleasant year. I remember Perth absolutelly thrashed us in one game. without breaking a football threat. I re-call it as effectivelly the end of the 'Bunton era', as players such as, Dwayne Lamb, Karl Langdon and Andy MacNish retirred from the game.

'95 ended very unpleasantly, after a stellar home and away season we fell twice to the old foe in the finals. Joondy came from behind in the second semi and won by a few points and I said at the time that we wouldn't get near them if we made the GF. '96 was horrible, but 82 was hard as the only game I missed that season was the only one we won :-(

Back to the year 1980 that was the last season the great Barry Cable coached in the WAFL after his horrific tractor accident in Orange Grove in October 79.
He headed to NM in 1981 and eventually took over the reins mid season from Malcolm Blight who was struggling with the added burden of being a playing Captain/Coach after himself replacing Ron Barassi.

1980 also saw the emergence of 2 of the great WA Full Forwards in Simon Beasley & Warren Ralph who would go on to kick some big tallies not only in the WAFL but the VFL as well.
Beasley I believe actually kicked the most goals of all players in the 1980s & is still the leading goalkicker of all time at Freeze's "recent beloved" Bulldogs!

LOL BH I was a Footscray fan way before you jumped on that SD trifecta train mate as youngster...used to have Ray Huppatz on my Footscray jumper and Budgie on my EF jumper.....if Kelvin Templeton had stayed loyal to the Western Suburbs he would of easily been leading Footdcrays all time goalkicking list....saying that Beasley was definitely a champion for both SD and Footscray.....used to love watching the Winners on a sunday night at 5.55pm...especially keeping tabs on all the WA players in the VFL.....Kenny Hunter at Carlton was a favourite of mine to watch......

BH who did u support in the VFL back then?

Collingwood mate but I always kept an eye on all the SD & WA boys over there on The Winners and in the VFL page in Westside Football.
I thought you would have had Jumpin Jimmy Sewell's number on the back of your beloved Footscray jumper Freeze?
I also followed Port Adelaide in the SANFL which was handy as their GF used to be telecast on the ABC back then as well and Port were more often than not in it.

..yeah Jimmy was a favourite of mine....I think Huppatz had retired by the time Jimmy suited up for Footscray...was pleased to see Budgie join then after Sheedy didnt pick him for one of those Ess GF wins...broke Budgies heart apparently.....some bloody good WA guys on the Winners in those days...did both Sidebottoms play for St Kilda or just Allan?....

Nah SWANsea in the EPL mate! :cheer:
Garry & Alan both played at St Kilda (Garry may have Captained the Saints) also both played for Fitzroy & Garry had a short stint at Geelong although he missed the bus to a GF spot literally whilst there! :pinch:
