One for Southy Ray Bauskis didn't play in the 1980 SF Premiership side was he injured that year?

Also Freeze I must admit I was always puzzled by the Ken Smith appointment by EF in 1981 his namesake Brad only lasting the 2 years (1 of which was a Premiership) wasn't Ken Browny's assistant at SF in 1980?

I saw South lose to EP at Perth Oval that year -- 'Brown resignned after the game'. He accussed his players of 'ignorring his instructions'. From memory they did not lose again for the rest of the season.

Ray Bauskis retired 'Beas - I remember he did battle injury in his last games , broke a forearm at one stage too I think

Don Haddow got the gig as the spearhead

Swans won there first 12 games and South won there last 12.But SF didn't get the Marlboro $20,000.Swans in 80 didn't have a good record in the wet weather.Just hang on to win there 12 th game V Subi.Got a spanking V EP in the wet at Perth oval. And another by SFreo.
Having a look on Ricks site Waflfootyfacts.Crowds where very good in 80.Apart from R 12 to 16 that where 4 wet weeks. The Prelim crowd of 34,000 was the largest prelim crowd since the Wafl boom of the 1960's.Over 140,000 saw the 4 Wafl final matches.
Maurice Rioli performance in the Grand Final is still regarded as one of the best individual performances in the history of WA footy.

What a fantastic year.

Probably some of the best WAFL league football played that year, skill and speed wise ever witnessed in this State.

Ray Bauskis only played 3 games that year, and never played again after Round 10, that left a constant problem for Brownie at FF, Don Haddow ending up with the job, him also being the only player to play in both the 1970 and 1980 Premiership Teams.

Southerner is quite right, SFFC played some great wet weather football, winning some important games, infact it was quite a wet winter that year , I think one game there was nearly 2 inches on rain that day, something we just no longer have, however the final series and GF in particular was played in perfect conditions and SF absolutely smashed SDFC in the second half, M Rioli played what was probably the most scintillating football witnessed in a WAFL GF, easily taking the Simpson. A Sandover for TI wrapped a golden year for the Southerners.

The thing I remember the most were the celebrations at Fremantle Oval after the game, never seen anything like it before or after, just incredible to be there.

In terms of crowds, cant remember to many games with less than 10,000 unless of course Subi or Perth were involved, 11,000 seemed to be about the standard, with a few well above that.

Pretty sure EF played us in Round 1 1980 and copped a 100+ point loss?....Therefore I am going to hazard a guess it may have been the biggest loss for a reigning Premier in its very next game?

Was that Mark Olsen's one and only game for EF BH....fark one of the worst recruits EF picked in my 40 odd years of watching EF play....MO, Norsworthy and Nifty Neville Fields all came with big reps and fizzled badly....Dave Rankin,Jeff Cassidy and Colin Waterson came with no fanfare and delivered in spades....

EF demise was also a highlight of the year...lol , something rarely seen!

baz R7,R21 v Swans at Freo oval where both 15,000 +.Even R14 at Basso on a very wet day was 10,000.
The 9 games SD V EP.WP.SF where all over 10,000.
The 3 SD V WP matches where over 15,000.

Saw about 2 and 1/2 Quartters of the Biff Fest at East Fremantle, then dear old dad went home early to beat the Traffic from the 7 000+ crowd and I missed our Best Quarter for the year.:woohoo:

The one thing I remember is endless airings of Godley and Creme's Englishman in New York(Strange Appatus).

Great song.
