That might of been the start of that Swans V WP rivalry. That lasted over 5 years. Can remember Swans done something special which would of been Beasleys goal. And some blues after the game which where normally for the Perth and Freo derbys.
Remember going to the 2002 EP V WP GF.Massive crowd and fights inside the ground and at the pubs later.EP smashed WP that day.

The thing was that WP were a bloody moody side -- losing a number of close games, which had they won, would just about have got them into the top two on the ladder, Alas, having lost the aforementionned games, thay had to beat EP by nine goals to make the four. During the last quarter, they achieved a nine goal lead only to allow EP back, winning by four or five goals.

One of the games WP should of won was against Subi in round 15:

Subi 13.9
WP 13.8

Apparentlly the game is rememberred because there was no score for twenty minutes in the last quarter.

1980 also saw Mal Brown experiment with a half-forward starting at half-back and kicking goals , and eventually staying there for a while.
Benny Vigona was the first bloke I saw do it - Benny would have been a natural in the Harlem Globetrotters he was that good , I still lament the influence of Turtle Meat & Shandies geez , he'd just amble along throw a couple of sublime dummies , sidestep & bang through she'd go

Ark back in 1978 .WP coached by Perry Johnson had WP on 10 wins in a row.Subi broke that winning streak also.Subi from the 73 GF for at least a decade where WP's bogy side.
Remember that R21 game WP v EP.They where in the top 4 for about 5 minutes.Claremont where for the beating in that 1st semi also.

Great reading all you're memories of 1980 and for using my site - I'll put the 1980 budgets up on my site for download in the next day or so.

1980 was the first year I went to the footy as a 7 year old. my earliest memory is the preliminary final SD v EP I was sitting behind the goals in lower tier of the 3 tier stand and can still picture Beasley and Melrose kicking goals galore and the ball kept going over my head into the stand as Swans smashed the Royals, only for SF to repeat the dose to us the next week.

The Swans v Subiaco game as mentioned included Subiaco kicking 17 goals in the second half. Their total of 110 points is the most points a team has scored in a second half in a loss and 17 goals also the most.

Top 3:
S 110 vs SD, round 19,1980 waflfootyfacts.net/season/games/stats.php?GameID=6278
SD 95 vs SF r8, 1976 waflfootyfacts.net/season/games/stats.php?GameID=5882
S 94 vs SD r10, 2006 waflfootyfacts.net/season/games/stats.php?GameID=8566

gtr: yep, your right, poor old Perc got the sack in the middle of 1979 from what I have read? I listened to that game between EP and WP, looking back given their domination of most of the day, it was suprising WP let their nine goal lead slip.

bh, waflfootyfacts: What a funny game between SD and Subi. I bet Subi copped it half time and SD at three quarter time respectivelly? What it does show is that it is very hard to get the momentem back in a game.

I remember Perth's opening game of 1980. Alan Joyce's first game as coach. Bryan Cousins was back from Geelong, John McGuire from East Perth, and Bosustow at his peak (wafl wise).
We played South at Fremantle oval and dominated the first quarter but couldn't put the score on the board. I think it was something like 4.10 to 1.0 at 1/4 time. The 3 players mentioned were causing South all sorts of headaches. Unfortunately South seemed to wake up after 1/4 time and eventually got right on top and won by about 6 goals. It was an exciting and unexepected start to the season that disappointed overall.

Cesspit: good post. I think the PFC had a funny season in a way because you were competitive in nearlly every game you played. For example, you pushed SD to within three or four goals early in the season when no other club could get within ten goals of them in the first-half of the year.
