Is Brad Smith rememberred fondlly at Old Easts park. I was having a look at some 1980 budgets the other day and there seemmed to be a running battle over where to play Brian Peake -- in the centre or centre half forward.

Had a giggle about Subi from readding one article just after the sacking of poor old Peter Burton. Apparentlly the club flew over Ross Smith to try and raise morale, given that the club was in a bloody shamblles. There is a picture of Ross Smith -- with Brian Sieri --- looking ove the team's positions. They certainlly had their problems the Lions.

Stazza used to love playing against us. I remember him kicking a couple of bags for WP in the early 80s at Leederville vs SD including 82 and then it would be fair to say I was somewhat shocked to read he had moved to SF only a week or 2 later
Another game was around Anzac Day in 1986 when he moved to Perth at Lathlain Swans were well on top before Stazza who had been very quiet in the 1st half pulled out a 9 goal 2nd half himself to get the Demons over the line! :pinch:

Hi all

You can download the 1980 budgets (zip file) from this link - I haven't added it to my budgets page. I'll leave the link available until the end of this week - The file is 231MB and you'll need to upzip the folder to view the budgets.

Enjoy!

Southerner wrote: Cheers gtr - mate I loved watching the bloke play , just a natural talent & South Fremantle were just shit lucky to see someone like Stasa in red & white.
I was at Subiaco Oval one afternoon and saw him kick 11 goals against Subiaco - most of those came in about a 30 to 40 minute period , brilliant mercurial player
Mal Brown was a bit of a Father figure for Chris - made him into a footballer

The bloke was a bit of a freak footy wise, just a tragic end.

dg: yep -- we did got to within a couple of goals of SD, a fluke if ever there was one in football: it piddlled down with rain, SD would have taken us easy at first, and, in addition, they would have been nervous because they had 20,000 ridding on the game for winning twelve straight. I think 1980 was our weakest side of that disastrous era.

In the lead up to the twelve target evevyone in the footy community was anticipatting when SD might be beaten. Games ten and eleven were against EP and CL, both of whom were up with Swans at three quarter time. I think Todd rates 1980 as his best side, which just goes to show what a good side South had.

Probably. 79 wasn't much better with one more win and a slightly better % of 61.9  82 was up there with only one win but a lot better %. Later on 96 was a bad one, a few more wins but a % of 63.74. We copped some floggings that year especially towards the end and our wins were narrow

He came over to Perth in 1985 Beas. He was very consistent in '85 and played mainly on the wing. He was a bit hot and cold in '86 and that game you mention was a good example of his season. He was quiet in the first half. Swans were 6 goals up at half time and then Stazza went wild in the second half and we narrowly won. I thought Swans had a pretty good side that year but you finished last. Is that right.

We weren't the worst wooden spooner of all time that year Cess but after a promising start we faded badly with the talent drain to the East finally taking its toll after a few key injuries and a lack of depth to cover.

DG Good post -- your right about 1996 being an unpleasant year. I remember Perth absolutelly thrashed us in one game. without breaking a football threat. I re-call it as effectivelly the end of the 'Bunton era', as players such as, Dwayne Lamb, Karl Langdon and Andy MacNish retirred from the game.
