Senior Seagull wrote: Reading the 2 articles regarding the SANFL restructure and the sale of the AFL licenses, these guys, as usual are so far ahead in their thinking it's just not funny. All the way through in both articles their commission chairman was talking about supporting the 8 traditional clubs sending in business and marketing experts to help them remain viable, creating future funds to ensure an independent and vibrant comp for decades to come. The WAFC didn't need to spend $350k on this piece of future dunny rag, they just needed to get a copy of the SANFL documents and do what they have done.

Mind you the WAFC don't have the golden egg of selling off a facility like Westlakes but the selling of the licenses must be considered as long as it gets back to the 7 WAFL clubs in a similar manner as has happened in SA, otherwise in 5 years time any decent WAFL players will be lured to SA as they will be the only comp capable of paying decent money, same will be the case for delisted AFL players. The SANFL will become unbeatable at state games and dominate the 2 tier landscape.

Absolute spot on.

Anyway among all this cross fire on hypotheticals something more tangible is happening this year.

We are having our first night WAFL GF on a Saturday night, I for one like the idea.

Most people leave after the league and the people I spoke to about having the women's match as a curtain raiser the response was they would turn up at 2pm to watch the league match.

Yep, that's the response I get also mate.

But mate, and I do enjoy your posts by the way, we must adapt, fight when necessary, and we must find ways to build the coffers thinking outside the box. I never give up hope. I can see the quality of a Taryce Stewart, a Max Walters or a Corey Byrne...excitement machines and I know the WAFL production line is working...despite the poor participation rates.

Now we must fight to keep the colts played on the same day......the AFL/WAFC said they wanted kids playing in non-dewy conditions....so we can adapt...and we will...as long as our CEO's and Presidents don't undercut us

LaH it is good to be able to have a discussion with people that have differing views without resorting to personal insult and bile. Consider if you were a reserves' player: you are working your guts out to try to get a league game, not getting paid and then you are told that you are not very important and that you are going to have o play at 9.00 am? I would think that at the very least you would wonder why you would bother playing reserves.

No mate, I said alternate the ressies and colts between 11.00am and 4.30pm.....I don't think they care if they play before or after league...but yeah keep the boys together on match day I agree.

How many league games would be capable of playing a game starting at 4.30 pm during the winter months?

I have read the full report once and started on the second read. I don't think there is anything in there that actually helps the WAFL. As I have pointed out previously when I asked a director at Swans whether the company undertaking the review had spoken to Swans and the answer was NO. As a consequence I don't think there is any room for compromise.

Yes, I take your point 100% and I agree but sadly, us WAFL clubs have become addicted to outside funding. We no longer know how to make ends meet...we are pure addicts

I will cite one example. A Claremont sponsor, Kennards, was poached from Claremont by the WAFC to help pay the charge from Channel 7 to broadcast the WAFL.

They don't do it for free, that's business.

If they thought that enough people would watch it and therefore enough advertising could be sold during the broadcast then CH7 would pay TV rights to the WAFL to broadcast it.

Not enough people watch it and not enough companies want to advertise during it there the WAFLhas to pay for it to be on.

Port Adelaide was the interesting alignment in SA - they were allowed to keep only either 6 or 8 senior SANFL based players , the rest were lost to other clubs & leagues
Russell Ebert one of PA legends & hall of famers condemned the move

Adelaide is mainly AFL 2nds bit of a mish mash in make-up but they were allowed to recruit some senior players - the name Callinan rings one bell from one read I had

That's correct, its doesn't have the marketing power to cover itself so its subsidised.

Old mate Taylor has been quoted as saying it's a desire to play it at the new stadium if the right deal can be found in 2018
