The ABC televised the WAFL back in the early 80s along with Channel 7 and also had a Saturday Night panel show reviewing the games with the likes of Mike McCann, Vukman, Cometti, Brayshaw, Dorrington et al

The abc had always televised wafl, but only to the country live, until 1987 when tvw pulled out and they covered the last 1/4 live in metro.

The show you refer to was todays football, saturday night after the news with george g which showed highlights of all games, ch 2 had cameras at 2 games and ch 7 at 2 games footage was shared just before todays football was with todays racing with max symonds.

Later ch 2 moved the show to sunday morning with trevor jenkins, with highlights from 2 games , and spud slater did a few intervews. This show ended when they started showing full games live in metro, they also dropped cameras at a second game.

Don't forget the umpires' friend Fred Woods. Speaking of Frank Sparrow the best footy caller.

That's right Woodsy too - he never smiled that bloke

Quote from Frank Sparrow - " iiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnn goes Noel Carter
tackled by Bill Skwirowsky
ooooooooutttttt goes Noel Carter
stacks on the mill and it'll be a ball up ooooooooohhhhh it's on for young on old in this one"

Brillliant stuff Southy ...another couple of quips I remember fondly from Frank in the early 80s were-
"And it is Swans like the charge of the light brigade coming out of defence"
"And the goal umpire says she looks good enough for me"

Classic stuff from the late great Franky Sparrow. :)

one thing I remember him saying quite a bit was "he's gone in where angels fear to tread"

Hahaha yeah Halcyon days 'Beas - halcyon days mate

I look at these cheap weak Homosexuals with the Manbun haircuts like Masten & most of his pillowbiting mates who bite other players and I cringe

If any player ever dared to bite someone in the '80s they wouldn't have got out of the ground alive or survived the week in town that's the truth

What is it with West Coast Eagles , drugs , biting , spitting & booing our indigenous stars - pissweak shameful excuse for a WA side that pack of scumbags

Todays football was a great show hosted By george as you said with panel members Eric Sarich, Keith Slater, Bob Shields.
My most vivid memory was how they wrapped the show up every week when they said and finally the winners in the VFL were........... good night to you all.
The WAFL was king and the VFL was as important as local chess.
And some on here reckon Swans supporters live in fantasy  ..fair dinkum the Freo Derby has been irrelevant since the 90's, the Perth Derby is a far more intense rivalry IN THE MODERN AGE ..the Freo Derby is as intense as a $ubi v Claremont Powder Puff Derby!!
BH....IN THE MODERN AGE you say?... then apparently EP don't exist then?....thus the Perth Derby can't exist .....not to sure how you can call it a Perth Derby mate, especially if one side is 3/4 full of players with no connection to EP what so ever....

considering you have spent majority of your WAFL life span watching games in the WCE era of the of WAFL, I am quite surprised you even try and pass judgement about the EF / SF rivalry....reckon you have seen fark all Freo derbies in your life time TBH........some folk live in fantasy land that's for sure

Whilst WP & the former EP go at it hammer & tong (and wooden spoon) on and off the field the Freo Derby is more likely to throw a couple of feather dusters or pom poms around with limp wrists! ;)

BH you have me confused mate....folk here constantly state EP don't exist, yet you say their rivalry with WP is more intense than two teams who do exist?...surely you mean the rivalry between WP and WCEP is more intense than the current EF/SF rivalry?....

I guess supporting a club like SD, where you guys have been exposed to practically no first hand rivalry traditions, I can see where your confusion stems from.....touch wood you get that SD / WP GF you guys pine for then....sounds like the WAFL needs it, especially with folk losing interest in the comp by the minute.....though I have got a sneaky suspicion that's actually what you SD boys truly want, so you can justify your mantra, that the SDFC is the number one WAFL club in terms of supporters and practically EVERYTHING...fark..... talk about biting off the hand that has fed ya existence since the 1930's!! :pinch:

I reckon freezin has a point...how can a perth derby have the passion of yesteryear when the majority of players suiting up for WART have an allegiance first and foremost to the weagles?
