Did anyone see the article in the West last week regarding the possible financial cuts which may be imposed on the WAFL clubs in 2015. These possible changes include
  • Siphoning off some of the AFL money given to clubs for draft picks
  • Asking clubs to contribute $50000 each to secure a new broadcaster

Good on the South Fremantle president Hayden Raitt for commenting as follows:

"With the number of people the commission have got up there, if it was my business I'd have to start looking at heads,"

"They want us to be sustainable; they want us to be better managers. We've taken that role on and all of a sudden this year after budgeting has been done for most clubs, they're talking about cutting the draft fees.

"I don't know what's happening up there."

I have a horrible feeling that the commission is trying to push some clubs into a position that they will be unsustainable and then reduce the size of the competition via a few mergers. I hope I'm wrong......

Heres a solution................

Clubs should stop bitching about hand-outs and go get revenue to help the club. Swans are working on some redevelopment (shops hotel) of Steel Blue which will be a good money earner in the years to come and Subi have their oval deal.

This is not the 80's anymore clubs have to get off their ass to survive.

Look you nurture and train kids through squads and deserve a reward for doing just that for sure I agree but clubs should change their mindset about WAFC keeping them afloat.

Maybe if you cant survive mergers are the option???

Before mergers are considered, we have to drop the points from 130 and reduce the salary cap slightly.

I'd rather have a club with two less marquee players than a merger or no club at all.

Definitely got our hands on some good recruits this year. Goes to show that it isn't always high profile recruits that can make an impact...Boland (less than 20 VFL games), Yarran (0 WAFL games), Stockley (20 odd WAFL games). They're out there somewhere.

But yeah if each club lost two marquee recruits it should save us 50 grand a year each.

I realise that I'm sounding like I want to make the WAFL like WACA grade cricket....but those 16 cricket clubs survive at least on a shoestring budget and with no talk of mergers or clubs folding.

Some clubs don't have marquee players like Perth or Swans don't have a marquee player.
