Interesting on Club Alignments in Victoria. I see 2 of the AFL clubs are dumping their aligned clubs and putting reserves sides. Now will that happen down the track here?
It all looks like a dogs breakfast to me and the clubs seem to control the situation. I see one aligned club also has been made to wear their AFL clubs colours.. Signs of things to come? Since this article I have read that 2 other clubs are breaking their alignment unfortunately I cant find the article.
Pretty sure Williamstown was one of them as indicated by this article.

You can add EP and Peel to this list :(

VFL ALIGNMENTS – HOW YOUR CLUB’S WORKS

CARLTON / NORTHERN BLUES
A reserves outfit in everything but name. Carlton has total control over this alignment, seizing naming and branding rights from the old Preston Bullants last year.

COLLINGWOOD
The Pies have had a stand-alone reserves side for five years. Working a treat with a beefed-up development academy under VFL coach Tarkyn Lockyer.

ESSENDON / BENDIGO GOLD
The Bombers will walk out on this deal at the end of the season and field a Windy Hill-based reserves side. Mark Thompson a big factor and Essendon now counting down the days.

GEELONG
The Cats boast the best development model in the land. Their reserves side has traditionally been strong under development mentors Dale Amos and Matthew Knights.

HAWTHORN / BOX HILL
The Hawks wield more control than ever, forcing Box Hill to wear Hawthorn’s strip this year. But the relationship works well and Box Hill has been lauded for producing AFL draftees.

MELBOURNE / CASEY
Tensions have eased since Brendan Fevola retired and the Dees this year gave Casey control at the selection table. This means AFL-listed players often play VFL reserves, which isn’t ideal for development.

NORTH MELBOURNE / NORTH BALLARAT AND WERRIBEE
The one that bucks the trend. The Roos, unlike other affiliated clubs, have no qualms with their set-up. VFL coaches Gerard FitzGerald and Scott West shrewdly juggle their duties.

RICHMOND / COBURG
Richmond will end the alignment a year early and field a reserves out of Punt Rd side from 2014. The Tigers have long yearned for this, believing player development was hampered by Coburg.

ST KILDA / SANDRINGHAM
Relations improved this year when Chris Pelchen joined the Saints but there are still problems. The Saints hate Sandy’s postage stamp-sized home ground and a number of VFL-listed players are set to walk out due to lack of opportunities.

WESTERN BULLDOGS / WILLIAMSTOWN
An ugly mess with Willy desperate to tear up the deal at the end of this season. The clubs have bickered over team selection and the Dogs’ resting policy all year. Expect the Bulldogs to gleefully field a reserves side next year.

From memory the VFL aligned clubs can field no more than 12 AFL players in their league side, meaning many play reserves.

With our model it looks to be no restriction on numbers of AFL listed players.

We need to remember the WAFC introduced Peel under the guise of a huge growing population & the need to provide a development pathway for these young Aussie Rules players.

So I ask how is it developing young players from the Peel area when potentially 18 of the 22 in the league side are from the Dockers.

Add to the above 18 players, the fact they appear to have noq recruited Jarrhan Jacky and Marlon Motlop, and they already have ex Perth player Brendan Jones in their best 22... there doesn't appear to be much room for young Peel players like Jordan Wythes ot Laine Wilkins?

So for the WAFC to allow Peel to recruit out of zone players shows no planning and is an absolute disgrace!!!!!!!

Exactly agook. How EP & Peel cannot see this will destroy their local talent pathway is beyond me.

The way I read it is the VFL clubs who are doing well are Collingwood & Geelong who have their own reserves sides or are aligned but are in control by their aligned AFL club. The ones who struggle and are going their seperate ways have failed to work in partnership.

I wonder if either EP or Peel had any choice.

Was their financial plight so bad that they were told to align or fold?
