The WAFL name could actually still be quite marketable. It has the AFL in the acronym which is now (like it or not) identifiable with the game of Australian Rules.

If anything should change, the logo really needs looking at. Bring it in line with the help of the AFL to something that is recognisable. This would be good for footy in general.

Even watching Fox Footy last night there was reference to the WAFL as the WAFL, the VFL as the seconds.

You could call it W AFL , yep the AFL Logo with a W on it, look there are marketing gurus out there that know a lot about this stuff, I would go with the marketing executives that the AFL use, their brand has gorwn hugely - TV Rating are up 13% this year, what ever they are doing it works,,,whatever they do they should not use the local clowns that designed Weststar.

Tassie orginally had two leagues there was the NTFL int he north then another around Hobart in the south

I remember even back then it was having all sorts of financial issues, and a huge payer drain to Victoria...not just VFL but VFA and country leagues for $.

then I think they became TFL - that comp has been dieing for years and is in trouble , its just too close to Victoria and everyone is into VFL and now AFL, and now the AFL has really pumped teams like Hawks and play games down there...so naturally it stuggles with that competition.

The change of name to AFL WA is dumb. Maybe as suggested before re-design the WAFL logo to look more like the AFL??? More of a concern is the proposal to 'sell' the licences to the AFL. This is REALLY dumb! We read at the start of every year how WCE and FREO whinge that they are being used as a cash cow for the WAFL. If it is such a great income earner for the WAFL why the hell would you sell it??? Once the AFL get their hands on these licences the WAFL will be totally at mercy.......we will give you 2 mill if you change your comp to under 21's for example. I seem to remember this was bandies around a few years ago.

Why should the Government own the business???

Bizarre!

The money from the sale could bem used as a preserved capital for the WAFL...

The Eagles are a good business there must be companies around that would snap it up for its profits,

And therein lies the problem! Wafc sells licence. wce and freo return great profits. WAFL loss after loss. what now is good business? Cut loose the non profitable part. WAFL GONE!!!

Telstra has done very well also.

Mate the days of nationalision are 1950's thinking.

the WAFL may be a struggle city, what sporting comp in this country isnt, but the wafl is not going anywhere. the 2 AFL clubs would not have coughed up the millions of dollars to get alignments going and paying the other 7 clubs, if the plan was to see the WAFL end. They need more than anything a competition for their players to compete in. The WAFL is that comp.

the other option is playing in the NTFL or amatures in the metro area. Both of which are not viable and dead end suggestions. The wafl is not going anywhere anytime soon. there will be changes (ie. grounds, broadcasting, fixturing, name changes etc) that is a normal evolution, but the wafl in essence will still be part of the WA culture. in its deminished capacity or not. dont overthink everything.

But have that as an official attendance is highly misleading if they were all give aways...

Bazza how do you think the GWS attendances would be going without all their give-aways?

No idea - do they give away tickets,,,do the dockers or eagles,,,how would they go if they gave away tickets if probably what you should ask yourself,,profitable or not?? more to the point do they need to give away tickets,,,so popular is the AFL product in THIS state ???
