AFL Midseason Draft 3 years 10 months ago #207126

Playing for their reserves gives them access to first class facilities and experienced people.  It also could cause them a “what the hell am I doing here” feeling when you get belted every week.  I think the second outweighs the first, so yes, I agree.
To continue with the cricket analogy I may have created the chance for the hattrick but the catch was put down.  I don't need to declare my contempt for the Eagles; it is well known.  Quite clearly neither the AFL nor any of the AFL clubs give a stuff about any other clubs.  If they did there would not be a mid-season draft.

My second point does speak directly to how the Eagles are only interested in themselves.  I will not be surprised if the Eagles insist/demand that the two players are selected to play in the finals if the club makes it to the finals.

That’s where the WAFC needs to grab a set of balls and tell them no way!

We both know that is less likely to happen than me becoming an Eagles supporters and voting Liberal.

I understand the frustration at the MSD and the AFL but we do need to remember that these are young men who are now 1 step closer to realising their childhood dreams.

Have you thought that maybe the WAFL clubs actually care about their players and their futures and that playing for the WCE resale side will give these kids the best chance to be successful.

They only have a small window to impress and playing for SD or WP for the rest of the year would not get them any closer to playing AFL. Their best chance is to learn the system and get to know the coaching staff and players.

Just a thought.

Spot on CK..the MSD is a pain in the arse from a fans perspective and to a lesser degree a clubs perspective....but every state league club surely is there to facilitate the optimal development for every one of their players.....players aren't rail roaded into nominating for the MSD....it's an opportunity for the player to realise their childhood dream...atleast now days they go in there knowing full well it's a cut throat business and every chance they maybe spat out.....no one likes what happened to Mayo, De Luca, O'Reilly etc....but they weren't coerced in any way.....

Makes sense West and Collins play for WCE reserves, not fair for WP and SD, but I have no doubt both clubs will cope and open the door for some other youngster within the club to step up and show their wares.....too many folk on here invested way too emotionally I reckon.....every one of us would surely of nominated and accepted the chance if we were good enough back in the day playing footy...

Absolutely on the money freeze. Whilst it's a pain in the arse for WAFL supporters and clubs, this is about the players. As I said earlier on this thread, they nominate to be drafted so obviously they think it's a worthwhile exercise and are prepared to take the risk it turns out like Mayo, Deluca and O'Reilly. If the risk far outweighed the reward then you'd think no-one would put their hand up.

Matty Parker will be a star for Richmond - and a huge loss for us once again

I am hoping at some remote stage the WAFC will introduce a player concession deal that recompenses an affected WAFL club in this shitty draft thingo

Yeah dreamin'

Just a hypothetical.  I wonder whether the AFL would have any problems with the best player in an AFL club moving mid-season to a WAFL club.  Would there be a problem if a sponsor of a WAFL club provided  employment to that player?  No clearance required; not one cent paid to the AFL club.  Just a maybe the player will return to the AFL club the following season.

42 even before 1987 it was hard work dealing with the VFL.The Afl has the ultimate power to do as it pleases.
My issue with this is no compensation for the Wafl club..I'm wrapped for West+ Collins to be put on an Afl list.

I'm sure it will fall on deaf ears at the AFL, but kudos to Sturt for speaking out against the mid-season draft.
