AFL Midseason Draft 2 years 9 months ago #206926

Congrats to those 3 WAFL players getting selected. I read that the Eagles might seek permission for Will Collins to play for their reserves. A few other clubs would be breathing a sigh of relief I reckon.
As I read it the only permission they need is if they wanted him to play against Swans; they don't need permission to play him against any other WAFL club.

If the Eagles did ask Swans the answer should be, in my opinion, an unequivocal NO.
The way I read it WAFL players would remain with their WAFL team on match days if drafted by either WC or Fremantle. I don’t think it would make sense for WC to ask permission for Collins to play one match with their reserves. I think the idea being to fast rack his learnings with McGovern and others being out.

For instance I think Connor West will play the remainder of the season with WP unless called up for an AFL debut. I think these mid season draft picks are rookie listed anyway and have to be elevated onto the main list to be eligible to play.
These are the conditions:
  • They will not be permitted to play against their original Club unless otherwise agreed by all parties.
  • The player has the right to return to their original Club to participate in finals if their service is no longer required at their AFL Club.
Both of these points would be redundant if the player remained at their original WAFL club.

See attachment in my last post.
So according to that the Eagles will let the player stay at the WAFL club unless they don't.  Their word is worth less than the dodgiest snake oil salesman.

No it doesn’t say that, it says the Eagles have an agreement in place that agrees to allow WAFL players to remain at their WAFL club if picked in the mid season draft but in this case will seek permission from SD for Will Collins to play for their reserves. That indicates it is up to SD.

Must be just a West Coast thing given O’Reilly played for Peel and against EF when he was taken mid season by Fremantle.

Also, is that forever or just this year?

So the Eagles are willing to NOT honour their commitment that any player drafted in the mid-season draft will remain at their WAFL club for the remainder of the season.

42, firstly, let me repeat that I am utterly opposed to the mid season draft. I think it is appalling that WAFL clubs can plan their season around having a list available to choose from and then have the rug pulled from under them mid year. I know that can happen with injuries, but that is just part of footy. WAFL clubs should be able to have confidence that their listed players will remain available throughout a season. Luckily for SD Anderson wasn't picked up, as his absence would have affected S more than potentially losing Collins.

On the subject of whether he will play for WCE reserves, I am only going off what I read in the paper. But that says that WC are hoping SD will consent to allowing Collins to play for them, on the basis that the two clubs enjoy a good relationship. What does that mean? In what way does SD apparently have a better relationship with the Eagles than any other WAFL club? Or is that just the Eagles trying to disarm and flatter SD so they agree to letting Collins go?

I feel for the clubs that have lost players to the AFL monster, Subi lost the comps in form mid in Josh Deluca and promising big forward Jack Mayo in 2018, Deluca never returned and Jack came home with a stuffed knee never playing a game for the Saints. Hard for all affected clubs but especially WP and Souths who have lost absolute top flight mids, that will heavily impact the remainder of their seasons, that being said I'm sure the individual players are delighted to have a chance at the next level, so we must respect their feelings.

Agree, SS, we all wish the players well individually, but losing a key player mid season can have a serious impact on a WAFL club. As I said, the problem is that it affects the way a club plans its season, and who it targets recruiting wise. Obviously you can't replace someone taken in the mid season draft. That said, I don't think the players taken this year will have a serious impact on the clubs in question.

Let me preface this post with the views expressed are my own personal views and not an official one of the SDFC.  I am a member of Swans but hold no official position at Swans nor do I receive any remuneration from Swans.

If the WCE have made the commitment that any WAFL player drafted by them in the midseason draft would remain at the WAFL club they were drafted from, Swans should quote that commitment when they say no to the WCE's request.

Does anyone really believe that a player drafted by the WCE in the midseason draft playing for the WCE reserves team will develop more than if they remained at their WAFL club?

AFL clubs drafting a player in the midseason draft should be required to pay a minimum of $250,000 to the club they draft the player from.

As to the comment about the relationship between Swans and the WCE I would be absolutely disgusted if it was true.

Being a WAFL tragic I too am completely against the midseason draft as it is disruptive to WAFL clubs for no apparent reason as the chances of drafted players actually getting a game with their respective AFL team are pretty slim. In saying that, players nominate for the draft so obviously they're of the view it's a worthwhile exercise and they're prepared to take the risk. So good luck to those guys who were picked up and I hope it works out for them.
