Listened to Sports FM in the lead up to yesterdays Prelim, they mentioned that the AFL decreed that all state leagues must cut their salary caps by 30%!! Sounds like a done deal, but as you would expect the independent thinking SANFL are yet to agree. WTF are the AFL doing sticking their unwanted noses into WAFL clubs affairs, has the Commission once again bent over and taken it up the shute from the AFL? WA salary cap will now be around $200k, not great when so many players will be delisted from AFL lists and looking for a new home. Cashed up clubs like EP & Perth will be affected, Subi, as far as I know cant recruit so wont affect us, although DG mentioned it was just for 2020.

I'll be onto my club asking what's happening and what they intend to do, if anything. The probable influx of delisted players would be a great thing for the comp, raising the standards which cant be a bad thing. They also mentioned a renewed push to dump the ressies. FMD why????? leave OUR comp alone. The best way to ensure the WAFL's future is for the WCE & Freo to provide additional funding, Despite the expected $14mill loss by WC they will still have north of $35 mill cash at hand. It seems certain most/all clubs will be caretakers for the AFL leftovers, maybe that's why they think they can slash the cap.

Not happy Jan!!

Won't affect Subi.
They have a separate set of books anyway.
And they will want to play under Kyle anyway.

Not sure why people think the DEES are "cashed up".
They do have a reserve fund of about $500k.
But that is just that a reserve fund under trust.
To be used only to stop the death of the Club.
Despite Covid the DEES look like turning a profit and in any case would not have used the Centurion Fund.

Having said that I think the DEES may take the advice of the WAFC to become more like Subi.
So I guess a new set of books maybe in order.

It will effect all clubs, the cashed up or not.

This season has seen a few clubs struggle with memberships and sponsors which often carries over into the next season.

The diminishing of the reserves and replacement with the Hanna Barbera womens games should realistically see the number of paid players reduce unless they are told to pay the women which would really spell the end of the WAFL as a financially viable league.

Clubs won't have a list of 35 ( I do not know what the list number is) but will have 30 with access to players at other leagues if required. That in itself creates issues, why would a player at say Balljura come back to play ressies at EP. Perhaps Peel had the right idea this season.

It will only affect clubs reporting player payments on the books.
The WAFC doesn't have the nouse or financial capacity to check player payments.
I have come across many untraceable payment systems.
I don't think the AFL has thought this through.
Is it because over East they control the comp where AFL listed players bide their time waiting for a league call up.If AFL listed players are released to play in the WAFL does that mean a portion of their AFL payments are used in calculation of the overall team payments. A weekly juggling act.

Sounds to me like the AFL are worried strong second tier comps like the WAFL and SANFL might provide an attractive alternative to the demands of the AFL. Surely they cannot dictate to state comps what their salary cap is?

The opposite is required if they are going to trim AFL lists. And isn't the SANFL salary cap at least double ours?

TRSM in order to be "creative" with player payments you need to have the resources in the first place.
Subi have found a way because they have the resources not available to other Clubs.
It will take years for their resources to diminish.

necessity is the mother of invention and many have found it necessary and the only means of winning a WAFL flag.
There are many schemes.

I'd like a salary cap so all teams can afford it. There is plenty of players playing AFL football in the suburbs to make up the numbers.

Need to work on a new zone, because it's very lopsided, as demographics changes from decades to decades.

Oouch -expect the strong A grade amiture league. And country leagues pouncing on Wafl players next season..
South Australia has a history of telling the Vics where to go on footy matters.Could see some toptier players heading to the Sanfl, like the late 1980's.
