Hey all to help fill the gap with no footy I am running a few polls to come up with some teams of the decades.

First up is the 1980’s - will do a decade a week ...

A player must have played a minimum of 50 games in the decade to be considered.

Choose your favourite or the best player from each line - one player per team per line - enjoy! You have until 1/4 to vote.

Please share to get as many votes as possible....

Great idea and great work mate.
Ive picked my choices and I wasnt even totally SD biased either as you cant go past the quality of Michael, Rioli, Malaxos, Peake, Ralph etc....thats how good WAFL footy was in the 1980s as we all know!

Thanks Rick.
Lots of fun with some wonderful memories. Had to pick John Duckworth at center half back.In the top 5 of players I've ever seen play including AFL players. He was the full deck of cards.Big,fast, great mark, massive drop punt + even bigger torpedo punt.physical side to his game also.
Also won the 1979 Magarie Medal in the Sanfl. That would of been a cracking competition back then. With the Sanfl entering there 1980,s Golden Era similar to the Wafl's 1960's.

Thanks for the feedback guys. The hardest thing was trying to put players in positions they played and trying to pick between players - had a few miss out, and tried to be fair by having a player from each team in each line - some interesting votes so far.

Was a bit of fun puting the list together, first year of watching footy as a 7 year old in 1980 so older seasons might be a bit hard so if anyone wants to put a list up for say the 70’s or 60’s for me that would be great.

I think you have to try and be impartial in these things. Apart from the obvious in Wiley (EF fan favourite) the only other Perth player I considered was stinger Rea. Ralph was the obvious choice but Rea was superb especially in ‘85 and ‘86 when he topped the goal kicking.

Stinger Rea and his sidekick Wayne Ryder in the forward pocket were a deadly duo around the goals for the Demons for a few years there Cess in the 80s.

Interesting, Rick.

Based on results (ie premierships), SF seem to be somewhat over-represented, and Subi and Claremont under-represented.

And did the garlics even field a team during the 80s? :)

jack: ironically enough, I would not have put Brian Taylor in the side. It comes down to whether Keene, Featherby and Buckenara should be in the side.

I would put Keene in ahead of Moss, simply because he could play up forward as well; Moss would struggle to get into Claremont's best ever team, Mycock and Mcintosh would play before him.

Featherby was a great player, possibly the best player the league has had in terms of possessions won. Rioli, would always pip him for his brilliance of play, his pace, his ability to bring lesser players into the play, and because, he could seemingly see things out the back of his head.

Was Buckenara eligible? If he is eligible he needs to be in the side ahead of someone, such as, Kevin Taylor or Benny Vagonia. Taylor did not do much for EF and his one good season, was actually, 1979, outside the decade parametres of the team.

If you wanted to put a WP player in the side I would get rid of Brian Taylor and put Craig Turley on one of the half-back flanks.

In any case, it is a great side, picked by some good football judges.

Thanks Ric.
