Going off topic here so this will be my final word on this, I've watched the 81 grand final many times and think Moss at least broke even with Michael if not beat him. And Moss is high up in the best players list from that grand final. And listed as our best player in the 83 21 point loss. And we were not "lucky" to win a flag in 81. We were conclusively the better side on the day and bad luck to South that they kicked so many points mainly from outside 50 and deep on the boundary shots. And we are often labelled as underachieving in that era but lost Hunter after 80, and the Krackouers after 81. South also won only one grand final from 3 in that era with only really (the great) Rioli leaving and he played all of their grand finals but we never hear that South underachieved also.

TOO: good post -- I have made the same comments about SF in relation to 1979, without incurring the wrath of their posters and in regards to EP in the mid to late 1970s also without incurring the wrath of their posters.

BH: I am with you 100 per cent on the era thing; the 1980s produced all those players in Ric's side plus the Eagles side of the late 1980s. I think we also won the teal cup in the middle 1980s?

TOO you make a good point about player losses to the vfl in the 1980s before the WCE came along in 87 and it is interesting to look back on.
CL, SD & EF were severely hit by them EP got raided in the late 70s by the Vics but SF were not as hard hit with Rioli in 82, Hardie in 85 & Dorotich in 86 their only significant losses to the Vics whilst Monteath came back from there and they got Mount & Vernon for Rioli.

Of course when the WCE started in 87 the floodgates well and truly opened as not only the 35 original squad at them but the likes of- Hepburn, Mitchell, Sartori, Christian, Starcevich, DaRui, Dennis, Stephens, Harding, Wilson, Winmar, Bairstow, Spalding, Yorgey, Dean, Sells, Crutchfield etc all went East as well that is a bloody lot of players to lose in one Summer!

BH, didn't Andrew Purser's ruck buddy Graeme Carter go over to North Melbourne post the 1979 Grand final, or was that before the 79 GF as a teenager?.....just remember him connected to NM in some way.....

Big Carter did a pre season with North around then Freeze but he actually played every year at EF from 79-84 bar 83 were he played in the bush from memory hence why I didnt include him.
Ended up playing a bit in the SFL after EF possibly at Applecross?
