TOO -- just quickly, because of the abilities of the other two i mentioned; Claremont nearly lost three grand finals because of Moss.

Which 3 grand finals? And not when he was a spectator.
Moss was TOO good, Played 339 games Clar/Ess & won SEVEN straight B & F's.. That's GREAT.

LS -- in all of those finals he never beat his opposing ruck man. In 1980, against EP, he had less possessions than Wayne Duke and John Nolan. In the 1981 gf, Michael beat him, and, had SF kicked accurately they would have won with the third highest score in gf history. Do you think moss would have been re-appointed after failing to win the flag for five seasons?

He did play in 1982 and 83 and was thrashed by Sidebottom and co -- did SD beat nobody?

You stated "Claremont nearly lost three grand finals because of Moss". Nearly losing usually means they won those grand finals.

CL had the most talent between 1979-1983 -- ken hunter, graham moss, blackwell, and in the end, were lucky to win a premiership. He, and they under performmed.

Mycock and Mcintosh, on the other hand, managed to win them a flag from fourth, their first in 25 years, and their last for nearly another twenty years, playing together in a lesser side than Moss enjoyed.

if we are going to do a seventies team of the decade I will go for the following east perth players.garry malarkey at full back.ken mcaulley on a half back flank.he played everywhere mainly chb sometimes full back against Austin Robertson but in 1972 when the royals won the premiership Richard michalczyk was the chb and he played hbf.also phil Kelly on a wing.also had ross glenndinning, glenn Robertson and kevin Bryant as handy kpd's as well.the seventies was a golden age of kpd's for the royals and I doubt any other team had as much talent.

Steve Curtis was a bloody good back pocket as well Chaddy and of course Peter Spencer as an onballer/rover.

AR I think Mossy played a lot of 1981 at CHF with the odd stint in the ruck backing up the likes of Beecroft, Harper & Van De Beek. From memory he kicked a few goals that season? Ralph kicked 127 goals that year at FF, Malaxos more than 80 in a pocket, Farmer around 70 from the other pocket & the Krakouer brothers both kicked around 50 goals as well as half forward/midfielders...that is 380+ goals between just 5 players...most teams dont even kick that in a season these days...incredible footy really!

bease- good one -- big moss would have also played in the forward pocket which would also explain his goals. In 1981 they played up to their talent and it was a privilege to watch them a little bit as a kid; they would be up there with the great SF and EP sides of the past.

ric: I too would put Marlarkey at full-back. I voted in this one and found it very interesting, voting strategically to try and get some second preferences in the side.

Is it me, or does this side lack talent comparred to 1980s?

AR for mine the 1980s (up until 1987) was the best decade of WAFL footy of all time with the 1970s, 60s & 50s not far behind although I am a touch biased as I saw all of the 80s compared to the other decades but all were great.
I am sure those who saw the 1920s, 30s & 40s would say they were just as great also with the likes of G.Doig, Tyson, Moloney, Campbell, Bunton, Clarke, McIntosh, Leonard etc all making their mark so to speak.

overlooked Stephen Curtis maybe because he was picked in the 80's team even tho he only played 66 games of his 216 in the eighties.as for peter he straddled both decades and would be in consideration.i suppose his biggest knock was he lacked pace.
