From the WAAFL by-laws:

12.6 The duration of a match will incur no time on except where there is undue delay such as a seriously injured player requiring a stretcher on the playing surface, a melee, a head count, light failure, lightning, or lost or damaged ball. In these circumstances, the field umpires shall direct the timekeepers to apply time on.

Stirling won by 2 points in a tight one. Led all day with Scarbrough coming back at them late.
Anyone know if the Scarbrough ressies player who went to hospital is ok?

Collegians vs. Whitfords
With 2 minutes and 19 seconds remaining in the match a stretcher was called for a Collegians player that injured their ankle. The field umpires, in accordance with WAAFL by-law 12.6 called time on with the timer stopped to allow the injured player to leave the field.

The Collegians timekeeper did not follow the umpire's instructions (or was advised to ignore their instructions - this matter is not clear) and the time was not stopped. The siren was played without the time on being called, with the Whitfords full forward taking a mark less than 1 second after the siren was played approx. 10 metres from the forward goal-line directly in front. The mark was not awarded and Collegians went on to win by 4 points.

In short, if the timekeeper followed the instructions and stopped the time as requested, the mark would have stood, with the full forward then being able kick for goal, 10 metres out directly in front.

Now I cannot speculate as to the outcome of the kick, however assuming that a goal was scored, there would be less than 2 minutes left in the game, with Whitfords leading by 2 points.

The only fact is this: the time was not stopped in accordance with WAAFL by-law 12.6.

To be reasonable, we can only speculate as to a) why the timekeeper did not follow instructions, b) whether a goal would've been scored from the resulting mark, and c) what would've happened in the remaining < 2 minutes.

I think the only fair and reasonable outcome from this match would be the WAAFL deem the match as a "No result" and award each team 2 points.

Going forward, I think the WAAFL has to either a) amend the by-laws to state that each team supply their own timekeeper and for them to sit next to one another to ensure this matter does not happen again, or b) supply an independent timekeeper so impartiality can be assured.

Anyone know if the collegians time keeper got home ok?

I'm sure the waafl will have a bit to say about his levels of intoxication during the week.

To ensure consistency with fixed time quarters, the League should rule that when a stretcher enters the playing area time should automatically stop and only start again when play resumes. For the avoidance of any doubt, in any other situation in which time is to be stopped the umpires should be instructed by the League to run directly to the boundary and instruct the timekeepers personally to stop time, with time to resume when play recommences. Currently the position (as apparantly occured today) is way too open for interpretation and abuse.

Hey Duck, this is copied straight from the By-Laws.

BY-LAW 24 TIMEKEEPERS
24.1 The home team for each fixtured match shall have a suitable and audible siren/bell. Both teams shall provide a timekeeper. Failure to do so will incur a fine as prescribed in Schedule 1.

So looks like the bylaws don't need amending as you suggest but rather Whitford get fined for not providing a time keeper.

I would suggest Whitford get their own ducks in a row before making allegations.

The WAAFL already has a rule - refer by-law 12.6 as referred in my previous post.

The umpires instructed the timekeeper at the game to stop the timer - they did this by blowing their whistle and raising their arms in the air.

The timekeeper, for reasons unknown, ignored this instruction.

The timekeeper has a responsibility to act on the instructions made by the umpire.
