Reason for, rather than against, I would have thought.

It would cut down on the number of flag-toting utes hooning around the suburbs, particularly in the vicinity of the South Perth foreshore.

So lets get this right, you reckon move the national day to a day no body would celebrate..? gee smart move.

I can see that it will also resonate with most of you strong secessionists, as January 26 is all about bloody NSW. :)

100% agree with this.

We did not become a country until Jan 1st, celebrating 26th Jan is incorrect and makes fools of us all (outside of NSW).

On that note, May 9 anybody?

You would have a point apart from the fact that all the States got together including us in 1946 ( it had been marked here since 30s) and agreed to celebrating the national day on 26 Jan, only diff was the public holiday would be taken on the closest Monday because hey everyone loves a long weekend, unfortunately that changed in 1994.

So the only fools are the ones that don't understand the history,

It acknowledges the first British settlement of the continent, and, is therefore relavant to us all. If that woman in the article would like a 'federation' holiday, she should compain for it leaving the 26 January alone.

I heard the tail end of a news article this morning. They said that 70% of people surveyed want the 26th left as is. I think it was 18% wanted a change and the rest didn't care. Anyone else hear it? Would like to know the details of the survey - where it was run etc.

It just goes to show that a lot of these self interested surveys should be taken with a pinch of salt as the outcome usually depends on how questions are structured and the target sample of respondents. Put the same suite of questions to punters in Freo and then in say Nedlands or Peppie Grove and I can guarantee the result will be different.
