BC wrote: That's a very good point about the public holiday LS...I hope all those who are fervently against Oz Day on the 26th including the councillors of the Cities of Freo and Yarra go to work on the public holiday otherwise they are seriously compromised.

BC, Brad braindead Pettit and hos cronies wont be there for ever, my guess is this will be his last term before he seeks a Greens or ALP Senate seat next election, once he goes all this anti Australia crap will end.

Also I see there is NOTHING now on Oz day in freo as the Chamber of Commerce is not paying for the fireworks.

Well done FCC you idiots.

yes mate...the poor business owners in Freo were harassed out of stumping up for fireworks by a social media campaign for a vocal minority fringe element which is an absolute shame for those families and so on who enjoyed it last year. The good burghers of Freo should remember that Pettitt is the one who has presided over a council which has routinely run Freo into ground and is now pretty much a no-go zone after dark. It's no coincidence that the main business players in Freo have left the place during Pettitt's tenure.

Like most people I don't give a toss on when the day occurs and if its going to bring Aboriginal people on board, lets put it on another day for Goodness sake. I just don't understand old men puffing their chests out talking about heresy or left wing conspiracies when the day is not a long standing tradition on the level of ANZAC day.

That's a typical response from today's generation mike. If you're in your 60's, you're just a silly old man with no idea. It doesn't matter that you feel strongly about it - "you're not entitled to an opinion unless it agrees with mine".

Where the hell did I say you're not entitled to your opinion??. I'm entitled to mine and I am in my 60's as well. You know what they say, opinions are like arseholes, everyones got one and they are all different.

Take it easy old fella. Did I say you said I wasn’t entitled to an opinion? I didn’t. I got pissed at your last sentence as a condemnation of seniors. And, it IS a long standing tradition. 26th January 1788!

I’ve got quite a few coins, medallions and coin sets commentating Australia’s heritage. Guess I should ditch them so I don’t insult the softer side of our new Australia.

I think Australia Day was celebrated in March or April in the olden days?
If the date is changed, will all the whingers and clucks still whinge I wonder? If they are not happy with the 26th, will they be happy changing to another date?
Perhaps change Australia Day to New Years Day? (when federation happened)
Then we can all help the economy by having 2 public holidays in one, and thus 1 less public holiday/ year.
Or stage australia day corresponding to when Captain Cook landed?
Not sure why a big fuss is being made of it? There are plenty of BIGGER more important issues that need addressing in society. I would have thought.

Why Captain Cook? Why not Willie Dampier or Abel Tasman.. Stuff this POLITICALLY correctness & stick with January 26th. Or dump it & also get rid of Christmas Day & that stupid Easter Carnival as these will also offend indigenous & other "religions".. Then again we could say " stuff them" & keep the lot.

Wasn't Captain Cook the dude that landed at Botany Bay in 1770, raised the flag and explored the area several days before sailing up the Queensland coast. And in doing so, is the basis for Sydney which was just up the road. If my foggy memory recalls all those school history lessons?

Probably no longer matters because the meaning of the day has long been lost. All it means to many people is, stick your hand in the fridge to grab another coldie.
Some one making a lot of political mileage out of nothing
