Spot on ark. Add to that, the Dutch didn’t mind spilling a bit if blood. I think our people were lucky to have the Poms settle the country.

Me too Baz. Will celebrate the day and ignore any other. I too am proud of the heritage scars on my ankles.

I rather like this concise and well reasoned argument for changing the date to 1 January.

I can see that it will also resonate with most of you strong secessionists, as January 26 is all about bloody NSW. :)

I doubt very much that they'd have Australia Day on New Years Day jack....but hey...whatever. On another note, I was disappointed in comments made by Fiona Stanley on this issue. I accept she's a pre-eminent person with a long history of working with Aboriginal people but I think she's drawing a long bow in linking the movement of Australia Day with improved mental health of indigenous Australians. I can't see it having any impact at all on rates of domestic violence, crime, incarceration, health, substance abuse, education, employment within the Aboriginal community other than to make a few vocal indigenous leaders happy and a gaggle of looney left minority supporters like Pettitt, Di Natale and co....maybe I'm missing something.

Spot on BC , Stanleys comments are ludicrous. Moving Oz day is right up there with Kruds Apology as far as making progress on reducing crime, domestic violence, improving health and education for Aboriginal folks at the coal face, achieved absolutely SFA.

No BC, you're not missing anything.
The 'few vocal indigenous leaders happy and a gaggle of looney left minority supporters like Pettitt, Di Natale and co....' are trying to make a mountain out of a molehill.

1 January would be the most ridiculous day to have it. nobody could be stuffed after NYE.

But would save the tax payer a heap of dough for Public Service holidays.

I guess if there was scientific or even anecdotal proof that moving the day would have a positive impact on the life of your average indigenous person then hey, let's give it a crack and see what happens but as I said, to my mind it's drawing a very long bow. Fiona Stanley is a living national treasure but think she's gone too far out on a limb on this one.
