BC -- that is true -- before that, they also gave Marcus North a lot of opportunities in the side too.

Swan42, in your opinion who in the WA team, based on performances this season would justify a position in the Australian side? I am struggling to think of anybody. WA are currently heading for their 3rd straight outright defeat to start the season and the team is not performing to anywhere near its potential.

The new guys they have picked for the 3rd test have been performing at a more consistent level in shield cricket over a longer period of time. I think its refreshing that they have picked young Renshaw and I hope he grabs his opportunity.
The future chance is in front of Sam Whiteman if he can follow up from his century yesterday with more runs in the next few games as I think that Wade is just a stopgap really. Behrendorff could also have some claims in the future.

Very true Mikeh.....Whiteman kicks on from here and he will be keeping v Eng next year.....great to see Renshaw rewarded, reckon Heazlett wont be far away......Maddinson?.....touch wood he delivers, bit hit and miss for my liking......rather Head TBH.......Handscomb was a no brainer......Wade will be ok against the seamers.....just wont or shouldnt be taken to Indis....perhaps Whiteman may get a chance......Sayers is a no brainer.....lots of left handers!.....Warner, Renshaw, Kwajaha, Maddinson and Wade in the top 7....Starc too thats 6 in the top 8!...........

No one is a more parochial West Aussie than me 42 but WA are a joke in the cricket world at the minute, stone motherless last in the Sheffield Shield we havent won 1 game!
Who from WA deserves a Test spot we have just lost outright at home to Tassie who hadnt won a game either?
And by the way Bird from Tas is in the 12!

I was not suggesting that a specific player from WA or Tasmania should have been selected. The point I was making was that the team was selected BEFORE ALL the shield matches had finished. That was the point.

Decent day of test cricket I thought. Made a change from the one way traffic since Day 2 at Perth. Evenly poised at stumps in my view. I thought there was a lot more energy in the Australian team today, no doubt the new players had a lot to do with that. Du Plessis's innings was outstanding when all the other South Africans struggled. Pretty stupid of those spectators that booed him, he is the sort of guy who would be motivated by that.

For the Aussies, Hazlewood bowled beautifully, Bird was good after his first spell and demonstrated that he should have been in the team ahead of Siddle and Mennie from the start. Starc was a bit off today from what I saw. He was either too full or short. I saw signs of Lyon developing a bit of confidence today which is good news for the Pakistan series.

When Australia batted I was very impressed with young Renshaw and his ability to leave the ball, a skill which has been markedly absent from the other batsmen in this series. In hindsight, it was probably a blessing in disguise that Warner wasn't allowed to open the innings because I have a feeling he may have been tempted to have a go at some of the balls that Khawaja and Renshaw were letting go. He might have got a few boundaries but he also might have easily nibbled one through to the slips cordon like he did in Hobart.

So we wait to see if Australia can get going in the sunshine tomorrow and perhaps get close to or (dare we say it) past South Africas score. They will need to get some 50 and 100 run partnerships and avoid losing wickets in clumps like they did in Hobart. Easier said than done for an inexperienced line up.

The Renshaw debut has me thinking back to the last times we had a major shake up after the retirements of greats etc, and that is when Wayne Phillips opened and made a ton on debut v Pak in Perth 1983 and also a leftie like Renshaw, there are similarities in both of them too looking at their batting shape

Fair call mate I reckon he had a bit of Matthew Hayden in his batting stance as well.

Its a pity Dave Warner didn't watch those two openers last night. No rash shots like Davy plays. Good defensive play..
