Greatwhiteshark wrote: I agree with some on here that Barnett is on the nose at the minute and it will be tough for him to stay in power according to the polls and the media.

I compare him to Jeff Kennett, a bloke who was hated and seen as arrogant and a general just as Barnett is, they got rid of him of course but a few short years later many said gee he actually got things done.
I think this will happen with Barnett as well.
I am late 40's and in my lifetime he is the only premier who has actually got things done and is moving Perth out of its 19th century slumber. Everywhere you look there is something happening, yes we have gone in to huge debt because of it and other reasons but this time there is something to show for it.
I visited Elizibeth Quay for the first time on Sunday and was very impressed and I can see that it will be a magnificent place just as Southbank is in Melbourne in 5 years time. People of course think it was a waste of money but those people will always think like that.

Like I said I think barnett and the Libs will get voted out, not because they should but just because thats how WA people are and they vote change just because of time and for no real reason.
I hope I am wrong and the Libs stay in and let barnett continue to do and finish what no Premier has ever done in this state.
Move with the times!!

GWS what an outstanding post. Two comments:

(i) was the water feature in action or had it been closed down for second time since the "Grand Opening"?
(ii) surely it is a 1950s mentality to want to keep building freeways and not try to improve public transport?

What exactly have they built out Forrestfield way.Was that a promise made in 2008 or 2013?

Burswood? You tell me,could they have built that earlier, knowing that was the location of the new stadium?

City Link?Do you think Labor wasn't go to build the same thing.

Ellenbrook? You can justify that decision all you want, but at the end of the day,it wasStill a Broken Election promise.

Nalder? You place any real faith in the Baldheaded Ferrett, wanting to build a few new tunnels, you go right for it mate.Go Matt Taylor!

That's a massive amount of transport infrastructure there. make no mistake, a fair minded observer would agree.

Play it down as much as you want out of frustration but its on Libs watch! to bad it doesnt fit your labor only do rail agenda..lol

The PTA justified the Ebrook - decision not me.

Leave the tunnels to the engineers.

Check out this great project of PUBLIC TRANSPORT INFRASTRUCTURE

Bazza to paraphrase Oscar Wilde(The Importance of being Earnest) to promise once to build the Ellenbrook rail link and not deliver may be regarded as the vagaries of politics; to promise to build it twice and not do it is NOTHING LESS THAN A CONTEMPTIBLE LIE.

As for the rail link to Forrestfield the following comments are apposite:

(i) it has not yet been built or started;
(ii) of all the possible routes this is by far and away the most insignificant and least important.

As for Liberal Party's commitment to rail transport it is best expressed by tricky dicky's dad's action in closing the Freo line or by one word: infinitesimal.

Grassy wrote: If you want to believe Zbarnett won that election entirely on merit, you are deadset kidding.

Sure,Labor didn't help themselves in selling Metronet,in not giving us the prop ostings and not convincing the electorate they could deliver on budget.

Knowing them, they would have tried to build the lot at once, instead of prioritising the most important lines, leaving the least important links for a later date.Col came up with a bigger offer and as we know Failed Miserably to Deliver. Is that what people were voting for?A major state Promise?BIG FAIL Bazza.

That was a major election promise, which with a big state revenue, could have delivered. Now with a Big Debt Blowout, they are promising us what?Yeah, there's that Bus Station, but that was always on the cards, given Wellington St Station had done it's time.Well done for once Dean.

But don't for one minute try and take the High Moral ground in Public Transport.Despite Labor wanting to move Midland for some reason, your mob hasn't come close to the ALP since Charlie closed the Fremantle line down,37 years ago and threatened to make it permanent.

For all the wrong things Burkie did,he saved the FREMANTLE line, thankfully and paved the way for a much better network in the years to come.Voters will do well to remember this very important STATE Issue.

YOu need to learn the art of being concise mate.

You asked about rail under barnett, as if nothing had happened which is BS.

Butler Rail Extension, Forrestfield Airport Line ($2 Bill), City Link Project, Burswood Spur line and Stadium Station not to mention a new state of the art City Busport and a new Ferry Terminal at EQ ( already had doubled service and patronage).

The Ellenbrook rail was a local issue and PTA studies have consistantly say the line cannot be justified. Get over it.

Burswood spur line: is that another name for the Armadale line Bazza?

The amazing thing about closing down the Fremantle line as undertaken by Sir Charlie was that they managed to win the next election.

Grassy: yep, correct; as a kid, at the time, I did not realise that the railway line had been closed for so many years.

Did you live in Fremantle at the time Grassy?

I take it you did and used the line a lot!

I lived in Freo pretty much all my life and used the line up to the closure, bugger all people were using it , patronage had collapsed , anyway dont forget the line was replaced by the new and first ever LINK BUS high frequentcy service Fremantle to Perth, which I also used, its worth noting that the plan was to install a high frequentcy Bus Lane on the land, possibly electric along the lines of the old trolley buses.

In fact I reckon electric trolley buses on dedicated lanes ( you can get 4 carriage systems) are thh way to go, they would be a good solution for the morley to ellenbrook route, I have seen them operating in Europe and are very good service. Bogota in Columbia have an excellent system, with purpose built stations.

The Stephen Michael Express ran off the rails courtesy of a collision with the Ron Boucher steam train :) ...It was a loooong train ride home for TI and his team mates that day back in 83! :cheer:
