Gotta love your tenacity swandog....defending the indefencible.
Being forever suspicious of the ranga, I have to wonder why she has called an election this early. Maybe she's got a ticket on Qantas to fly out to Wales on a holiday on the 15th Sept? Anyone got any ideas as to why she announced it so early?

Well I guess the party would not dare to dump her as leader now the date has been announced? I honestly cannot fathom how she is still leading the party. Reading between the lines on the tv report, many say it being a good option and gives the ruling party an advantage because more scrutiny is placed on the opposition. So we have an eight month election campaign! It's becoming more like America everyday :(
Apologies to any Americians who read this.

Perhaps trying to derail any attempts by KR and his supporters to launch another leadership challenge. If the polls start to work against her it could backfire on her.

It will make or break her for sure, really which ever way she did it, it seems the result (according to most on here and the media) is a fate accompli anyway, so whats the issue? Makes a change from endless election innuendo etc, the media will have to work harder to get other stories

Although she's a crap PM heading a crap government they have actually sprung a great tactical move in announcing the election and having such a long campaign.

Labour knows they can't win the election but if the campaign goes on long enough Tony may loose it for them ? A smart move but they have stuffed up too much and will still struggle to bridge the gap. Howard is the only sitting PM to turn it around in such a time and Gillard isn't up to his standards.

So old wonky wayne had his two bobs worth to say did he? I missed that part. Apparently the "official" election campaign starts in August sometime. It's probably what he's refering to. It will be one long yawn. Can someone wake me up when September ends?

News Flash... This could turn out to be interesting?

PM could be stuck.

JULIAR could be marooned in the former Russian imperial capital St Petersburg a week before the election - or risk Australia delivering an embarrassing snub to world leaders.

The Prime Minister's dilemma surrounds her invitation to the G20 summit, to be hosted by Russian President Vladimir Putin on September 5 and 6, about 15,000 kilometres away from the campaign trail in Australia.

Her presence will be keenly expected after Australia lobbied successfully to take over the chair of the group in 2014 and will host the next summit in Brisbane.

But her decision to hold the election a week after this year's summit has cast doubt on her attendance, and the chance to brief leaders on Australia's plans ahead of the Brisbane meeting.

Labor has set aside more than $350 million to host the Brisbane summit, with a handover of the chair expected in St Petersburg.

Observers say sending a representative at a leaders' meeting can never expect to carry the same influence as a national leader.
