BC wrote: are the stories around violent crime taking over in places like Joburg and Cape Town true in your opinion? I've spoken to plenty ex-pat Jaapies who reckon they wouldn't go back as it's too dangerous.

Its definatley not a "safe" place, I flew into Joburg, picked my car up and the first thing that greeted me was a huge sign saying WARNING CAR JACKINGS AHEAD.

In saying all that I never felt threatened or unsafe at all, and that included some dodngy border crossings into Zimbabwe when the place was tanking, the local currency had collapsed and there were some depsrate locals around.

Basically the white folk and black folk in Jburg Pretoria and Cape Town dont mix, people live in fortress type houses.

But I never had a problem there.

I actually felt more unease in Morrocco, in Tangiers it was as shonky as shite, and in Marrakesh Al Queda has blown up the main Tourist Cafe in the Square a week before I arrived, killing about 30 people, it was an eerie experience.

BC wrote: agreed bazza...my wife and I went to Japan a couple of years ago and the A bomb museum in Hiroshima is certainly an eye opener. we also went to Kyoto which was very pretty and bumping into geisha in Tokyo was a lot of fun as well. We've just got back from Sri Lanka and am looking at Iran some time this year. I believe its a fascinating place and very safe these days.

Went to Sri Lanka couple of years ago, Galle is great - really enjoyed it.

mmm Iran, yes, I would like too but not that sure, Persesoplis would be good to see, pretty hard getting a beer there.

Cyprus is good.

Antartica..did you go down with CSIRO?

South America is flavour of the month at the mo, everyone you talk to has been there or is on the way, I had planned to go there this Jan, but events intervened and cancelled it. Hope to get there, did you go to Lake Titticaca?

Its amazing how Aussies are so into travel, I wonder why that is the case.

When I was in the US, people thought we were freaks for going so many places, most of them never leave their home states.

I guess that's more an indictment on just how insular and inward looking the yanks are Bazza. If it isn't happening in the US then it just ain't happening. I must admit, since starting this thread I'm amazed at how well travelled some of our posters are. I guess I had a preconceived idea that most WAFL supporters probably give Bali a run every couple of years with the wife and kids but that's about it. Maybe the demographic of this site is not indicative of your average WAFL supporter...don't know..but some on here have been to some fantastic places that's for sure.
