Back in that year, the then EP coach, decided he could do without Alexander. Me thinks it was a big mistake. He was a fine player in his own right, and would have freed up other big men for the key positions.

I would have been rather annoyed at Subiaco had they not recruited Fitzpatrick back because we had a few good young ruckmen of our own the same year. We just could not find him a good job in 82.

Looking back, the whole thing was even stupider, as a result of EP's having won the 78 flag partly on the back of recruiting Cable and Mlller; in that situation, I would have definitely made sure that one of the club's best returned.

Ron managed to find a couple of jobs, too.

This thread does not have enough space to list and explain all of the dumb things EPFC have done over the years with players and yes there are some examples of good stuff but the stupidity, mismanagement and failures would be longer by my reckoning!

Grump: thanks, I heard an interview with Ron a little while ago, one where they went through his whole career. When talkng on EP, you could tell he still had a great affection for the club.

Grump: on the administraton side, looking back, do you think that it was a combination of mis management and Attwell's cuts being a bit harsh?

The club has had a history of mismanagement (an opinion) ranging from the enormous losses ($), the loss of players who were 'sold' to pay for debts and the somewhat mistreatment of players who stuck it out but at times felt betrayed. The lack of development. I always remember Greg Henderson working hard with the colts year in and out only see the club look elsewhere when we had boys who given the opportunity could have done the task but not cost an arm and a leg.

Those who bag Dean Turner really have no idea what he did when he took over to stop the drain on the funds available, I have watched him along with BH make difficult decisions to make the club more of a business and thus sustainable and that should have been happening 20, 30 years ago!

With Ironmonger,Ischenko and Craig Edwards on the list, and with impending player sell offs where we lost more quality players than any club in WAFL history,i would say Big Ron wouldv'e requested a lot of money to rejoin the club which at the end of the day the club couldn't justify.

Big Ronnie was after a coaching role after he retired from Fitzroy in the VFL and had pretty much hung up the boots altogether - but there was no such role vacancy at his original club East Perth at that time
There was at another club and they all decided on-field playing leadership was included

East Perth did lose a few players around that time but it must be said they recruited some too

And Shane Cocker around that time too?

we all saw a massive exodus East that started just before the topic time - all of the clubs were recruiting and we saw them come from Victoria , SA , NT even NSW , Qld & Tassie
and like Cable & even Farmer before them , some came back the other way but accepted roles at rival clubs instead of returning to their original clubs
but we also had a fair amount of players changing clubs in the WANFL for a fair period around then
