Besides the returning ex bulldog Stan Magro the only WAFL player of note i recall recruiting was Subi's John Dimmer, where as we lost Larry Kickett,John Hayes,Michalzyck,Paul Arnold,Peter Spencer,John Mcguire,Chris Allen,Shane Cocker, Greg Carpenter,Kevin Sparks,Peter Thorne,Willie Roe,Craig Edwards,John Scott,John Nolan to other WAFL clubs, some playing in premierships and one winning a Sandover,as well the champion Steven Curtis going to Port adelaide, and Wayne Otway to Essendon.

I think EP made the right call on Big Ron.BR slotted in nicely at EF as Captain \Coach.
As mentioned EP had no shortage of talented big men around there club in that era.Ironmonger a Sandover winner.Edwards,Cocker+Big Alex I.
Important to remember EP had a plum metropolitan zone in the 1960's,70's+80's.Colts+Ressies always contending for premierships. And a league team that may of missed finals 2 times in 20 years from the early 60's till around 1983.
Pretty sure back in 1986 just before West Coast under McNeil.Ep may of won the last 5 games of that season. That era of players would of probably won a Wafl GF. But it all changed after we joined the expanded VFL.Pretty sure at least 10 players from that side where playing VFL the following season.

There were some pretty good talent running around in the EP zone back in my junior footy days(70s/early 80s) - David Bain, Richard Dennis, Craig Starcevich, Tony Papotto to name a few....funnily enough Papotto was a ruckman until he stopped growing at 15...pretty sure Starcevich was already 6 foot plus by the time he was 15, whilst Bain and Dennis were just multi talented.

Thats right Gtrxuone we finished very strongly in '86 and as we know the WAFL went through a huge upheaval in'87 and we lost, Peos and Ischenko to the Eagles,Dennis,Starcevich and Stephens to the Vfl and i recently discovered on OPEN MIKE that Ross Glendinning had intended to finish his career back at the Royals, but was snapped up by the Eagles in their inaugural year and the WAFL as we knew it was never the same.

Good topic again AR.
When I was a wee lad EP had a plethora of ruckmen at their disposal- Wayne Duke, John Ironmonger, Craig Edwards, Alex Ishchenko, John Nolan, Shane Cocker, Barrie Quick etc even Paul Arnold was of ruckman size.
No surprise a few of the above moved on to greener pastures as you cant fit 7 rucks into a team of 20.

Papotto a ruckman!!that would be hard to believe but i recall he was a pretty hairy critter and would've been an early bloomer and probably started shaving when he was 12.

Wow Glenndinning would of been huge in the Wafl.A couple of others from memory that went east from that era.Darui-Clape,Christian,Bartlett to WC,Bain.Good Wafl players also Barone,Gianaccis,Kolbung. Also a distant memory of a classy left footer.Winger or mid maby Blakley his name.

gtr, Dennis played in Carlton's 87 premiership side in his debut season, Bain made his Fitzroy debut in 89 mate....RL, Papotto was the teams only ruckman back in my Maylands U/12 side and dominated....at Cyril Jackson SHS he rucked from memory in the interschool footy clashes between my school Mt Lawley and his school CJ.

I remember Johnny Ironmonger coming down to my Mt,Lawley FC u/16s training one night, he then proceeded to tell us we needed to improve our skills,, in all honesty we were rubbish, so I guess big John was just trying to be succinctly diplomatic.

RL no doubt EP lost some talent in the early 1980s when Mal Atwell came in as President and immediately cut player wages to stem the financial bleeding that was happening at Perth Oval at the time.
From the above though the highlighted did end up back at EP...after Atwell had left of course, whilst Otway came straight back from Essendon in 84.
EP did recruit players from other WAFL clubs around that same time but probably more those who were not getting a regular game at their original WAFL clubs-

CL- Clayton Lewis, Dean Winning
EF- Mark Shaw, Peter Hofner
PE- John Doyle, Murray Couper
SU- John Dimmer, Alex Hamilton (back), Wayne Loxley, Greg Kelly, John Hall, Brian Cook
SF- Ross Kerr, Robert Solin, Stan Magro (via Collingwood)
SD- Frank Wilson, Alby Smith, Grant Edwards
WP- John McTaggart, Mal Bennett

Interstate- Peter Thorne, Ian Scrimshaw, Kevin O'Keefe, Dennis Collins, Brett Stephens, Tom Smith, Brendan Kavanagh, Gary Sheldon, Steve Irons, Peter Ivanoff, David Wing, Mark O'Hurley, Kevin McGuire, Phil McCormack, Peter Wright
