As mentioned EP had no shortage of talented big men around there club in that era.Ironmonger a Sandover winner.Edwards,Cocker+Big Alex I.
Important to remember EP had a plum metropolitan zone in the 1960's,70's+80's.Colts+Ressies always contending for premierships. And a league team that may of missed finals 2 times in 20 years from the early 60's till around 1983.
Pretty sure back in 1986 just before West Coast under McNeil.Ep may of won the last 5 games of that season. That era of players would of probably won a Wafl GF. But it all changed after we joined the expanded VFL.Pretty sure at least 10 players from that side where playing VFL the following season.
They were not the only team to lose players at the end of 1986 GTR.
Yep EP lost Dennis, Christian, Starcevich, DaRui (and Stephens back to VIC) over East and a couple to WCE- Ishchenko, Peos, Bartlett (1 game, played mostly at EP in 87).
Bain left in 89 whilst Clape didnt debut in the WAFL until 1988.
Compare that to the likes of-
SF- Worsfold, Matera, Hart, Dorotich, Winmar, Bairstow
CL- Lewis, Malaxos, Davidson, Miles, O'Connell, Mitchell, Hepburn,
EF- Brennan, Bennett, Mainwaring, Lockyer, Wrensted, Harding, Wilson
SU- Keene, D.Lamb, MacNish, O'Loughlin, Scott, Zanotti, Dean, Sells, Crutchfield.
...they probably didnt fare that bad to be honest!
Then when the parasites went bust in 1988/89 - they got priority access and we copped a second round losing Sumich , Matera & Jakovich
