Indeed, Taylor kicked a hundred goals. In relation to the forwards, it depended a little bit on the standard of the full backs; 1981 saw big scores kicked, but no centurions in the goal kicking; Smith should have been picked in Subi's best ever team ahead of Pickett.
AR in 1981 Warren Ralph CL (127 goals) & Simon Beasley SD (119 goals) both topped the century.

In addition to those 2 star full forwards you had the likes of-

Steve Malaxos CL (82 goals)
Bruce Monteath SF (78 goals)
Brad Hardie SF (75 goals)
Brett Farmer CL (67 goals)
Noel Carter SF (66 goals)
Brian Adamson WP (53 goals)
Mike Richardson SD (51 goals)
Doug Simms P (50 goals)
Phil Krakouer CL (50 goals)

.....all kicking over the 50 goal mark

Whilst the likes of-

Jim Krakouer CL (49 goals)
Jim Sewell EF (48 goals)
Grant Campbell EP (48 goals)
Ian Thomson EF (47 goals)

all only just missed the half century in 1981, but would still have all won the Bernie Naylor Medal in most of the recent seasons!

bloody incredible breadth of goal numbers aren't they mate - what a year or three we had then , most of those blokes are club legends and still on highlight reels on places like youtube

Mate I used to jump out of bed on a Saturday morning in great anticipation of seeing a WAFL player kick a bagful (10 goals in a game) as a young tacker back in the early 1980s, now most teams (mine especially) cant even manage that very sadly!
and snatch the sports section of the paper every morning from Dad to sponge up the write-ups - each day at school you'd race down to the oval during breaks to play footy and cop ribbings from rival kid supporters mate
The commentary drowned out when you had to listen to that instead of going to the match

Will we ever get a 100 goal kicker in the WAFL Swan42 or has footy changed too much? I don't see it happening again.

As you know I am unbiased. Imagine there was time when Max George, Mark Olsen, Simon Beasley, Brent Hutton and Austin Robertson, Gary Fathers, Todd Breman, Jason Heatley and Brad Smith actually existed.

I think SD and S might have had the best over the last 50 years or so.
LaH my immediate thought was I am more likely to break the 100m world record.  Personally, I can't see it happening.  There would have to be a drastic change in tactics adopted by the coaches and there is no indication that is likely.  Players seem more content to chip backwards and sidewards for a cheap stat rather than kicking to a contest.  How often during their playing career did we see one-on-one contests between Warren Ralph and Tom Mullooly?   That wouldn't happen these days?

and remember we had forward pockets/half forwards & rovers kicking 60 to 80 per year too mate
From memory Billy Walker kicked 61 goals in his first season playing for Swans.

LH it was remiss of me to leave big Laurie (and also Big Ron from EF) off that list as I can well remember him giving SD (and poor ol Tom Mullooly coming to the end of his great career) some real hurry up back in 1985 from full forward kicking a couple of bags of 8 or 9 goals that season against us.
His long telescopic arms and long straight kicking were very hard to contain with the ball well delivered from afield by the likes of Featherby, N.Taylor, D.Lamb, P.Lamb, Mort, Macnish, Sells, B.Taylor, Spencer, O'Loughlin, Lee etc

Normie came to SF as a full forward but ended up at Full back at times - great fella down to earth battler who was a straight kick at goal

Not sure what this has to do with this weeks game.
Me neither but it's great reading some of the memories of times gone by and plus the fact we'll get back on topic at some point so not a problem as far as I'm concerned.

I was very luck that I caught the tail end of Austin Roberston's career in 72, 73 and 74. My nanna took me to a game at Fremantle Oval in 1974 where he kicked 10.5 in a rare win down at the Port.

He retired but along came much vaunted and record breaking Goldfields full forward Dick Robinson. He had a few good games but didn't quite make it.

Gary Fathers was next. Came up from colts and kicked 84 goals in his first full season of league football. He used to gently nudge the full back to the left or right of the ball with his hips and clutch the ball seemingly out of position. He had the most unusual kicking style where he would throw the ball into the air by about 8-12 inches and "hope" that it would land correctly on his foot. He retired at 21 due to a knee injury and lives in America now I was told.

Peter Munro was next. Blind as a bat so it is said and once tried to mark a seagull thinking it was a football......but that might be an old wives tale. But had some good matches.

Then came Laurie Keene who played a lot at full forward early on - thin as a beanstalk when he started - and somewhat dismissed by fans - like Johny Narkle now as not being ready. He surprised everybody by kicking 9.5 in his second game which was against Perth from memory. It came out of nowhere but the selectors took a chance and boom....an unlikely star was born.

Great days as you say.

Note: Yes it's off topic but I'm sure said topic will return once the footy budget and teams are announced. :)
Cracking post LH from a Subi perspective.  I also recall Clint Brown started up forward before going to full back and of course Turbo Todd Breman had a couple of good years along with Warren Dean.

LH being a bit older I saw most of Robertsons career, and what a career it was. I saw both of his 15 goal hauls in his record breaking season, the last game v EF he had 22 shots at goal and bagged the vital 15th goal well into the last qtr. We were safe in 4th spot whatever the result so despite what was said before the game by Bunts about no special treatment for Ocker, it turned out that Bunts was the major offender providing Ocker with pass after pass, backwards sideways anyway he could. Must have been a nightmare for the EF FB who I think was Spriggy, no slouch as a FB but Robertsons lightening leading was very hard to counter.

Gary fathers was an interesting player came up through Subi juniors via Marist Bros. Had a sensational pair of hands, I'd swear he had super glue on them, he could mark just about anything, but his kicking was something else, so awkward to say the least, probably would have kicked a ton instead of 80 if his kicking was slightly more consistent.

The 3 best that Subi have had are Robertson, Brad Smith and Heatley. Robertson & Heatley were primarily lead up FF whereas Smith got a lot of his goals from contested pack marks, his strength and aggression were huge assets.
