From the club website.

"The Subiaco Football Club are well into pre-season, with 59 days until our Good Friday clash against Leederville Oval co-tenants East Perth in the City of Vincent Match.

The players returned from the Christmas and New Years break in top condition and raring to go to hit 2021 with a bang.

Prior to the break, Subiaco recruited Corey Robinson from East Fremantle who will add depth to our Midfield group, with ex Richmond VFL player Chad Harris fitting in nicely, after commencing training last Thursday after serving his two week quarantine.

Football Operations General Manager, Kristian Dicton stated that the rehab group is quite small at the moment, which is a positive sign.

“Jack Mayo is tracking well from a serious Knee injury and is set to be available mid-season.

“Big thanks must go to our Strength and Conditioning team of Michael Dobbin and Jemma Bassi along with our Physio Kristelle Graus and Head trainer Maddie Oudman; who have put a mountain of work in to get our players bodies right and keeping everyone on the track” said Dicton.

In 2021, the club looks to bounce back from a disappointing 2020 season, with the aim for all grades to play finals football.

Dicton said “we are also looking to rediscover our ruthless attitude and be the hardest working, most disciplined team in the WAFL competition”.

After debuting seven players in the 2020 Optus WAFL Premiership Season, Dicton expects a few players will continue to develop at league level this year, with some 2020 Premiership Colts players also in for big years.

“We have a good mix of experience and youth but I’d expect players like Aaron Breman and the Hickmott brothers to continue on developing at League level as well as some colts players; Lachlan Henderson, Lachlan Vanirsen, Jed Kemp and Matthew Johnson.”

“Nick Martin is also one that’s in for a big season pending how he goes with his WC eagles train on commitments” said Dicton.

With the recent outbreak of COVID-19 in Perth, the players are now only able to train outside for one hour per day with one other individual. Dicton said the players all have program’s they are set to complete at home or in their allocated one hour outside, with the main messaging being to keep healthy, keep engaged with coaches and team mates ,and to be Safe.

“We are very lucky that our group is resilient so like everyone else we are just in a holding pattern until new information is released” said Dicton.

Subiaco Football Club will look to advice members of updates with the COVID-19 situation once more information comes to hand."

Interesting on the club's website, in an interview with Brandon Matera he describes himself as a forward/midfielder. His aerobic capacity should be pretty good after several AFL seasons under his belt so you'd think he'd slot into the midfield nicely.

Not that he's in Horses class but if he plays in the mids he brings a pretty good left foot kick that is always handy coming out of the packs, something we will greatly miss with Horse gone, his kicking was surgical most of the time, a forwards dream.

The forward line is looking pretty good with Borchet back fit, Sokol, the Matera's, Breman at CHF and Martin if WC dont take him, Marsh (although I'd like him to do some work in the mids) plus Mayo for the second half of the season, although I have few expectations for him, takes time to get up to speed after a knee re-con. Would expect he'll play quite a few games in the 2's, maybe back for 2 or 3 at the end of the H & A.

Yes I think we'll be good up front, ok down back but it's the mids which worry me a bit given we've lost Horse and Benny Newton. Still... a couple of the young blokes came on last year so hopefully we'll be thereabouts again.

We should be ok with the mids, I have a feeling Harris will be handy, he's both quick and hard at it

This off the SFC website

The Subiaco senior program had their first competitive hit-out of 2021, with an intra club match being played on Saturday morning at Leederville Oval.

Speaking with Head Coach Beau Wardman, he said it was exciting for the players to get into some elongated match-play on Saturday in a competitive hit-out.

“We managed our minutes this week as we continue to build in our conditioning program. The additional breaks meant we could implement a couple of things we have trialled over summer.”

“The biggest change was adapting to the new interpretations around the protected areas” said Wardman.

Some seniors players were managed due to a limited pre-season with Jordan Lockyer, Harry Marsh, Lachlan Delahunty and Max Walters missing the game.

“We are cognisant at this time of the year that individual preparations can be varied and this gives others an opportunity to step up.”

Jakob Atkinson also played some managed minutes in a different role.

A few players caught Wardman’s eye during the game including new recruit Lewis Putt, and Colts Premiership Player Jaxon McGowan.

“We gave young Lewis Putt a run through the ruck, he did a great job first up for the club coming down from Scarborough. It was good to see Ryan Borchet and Aaron Heal back out on the field having missed most of the short 2020 season.”

“Greg Clark stood up in the midfield and showed great leadership with some of the development mids. Jaxon McGowan showed some promising signs in defence lining up on Brandon Matera” said Wardman.

The Club will continue to build our match play over the next few weeks ahead of our first hit-out against East Fremantle in the pre-season fixture on March 13. “With just over five weeks until round one, our preparations start to ramp up and really dial into our connection” said Wardman.

SS...it is a mystery to me why Greg Clark never really got a shot at the next level after captaining the state 18s, a spot in the AFL academy, his size, obvious skill but was still overlooked....it's got me stuffed but good for Subi nonetheless.

The "new interpretations around the protected area "٫ is that the man on the mark rule the AFL is introducing ? So the WAFL is bringing that in also?
