The blacks would not be in America without slavery -- even under slavery they lived in better conditions than they would have had they remained in Africa.

STT: correct, I was just putting the system into context. The point, is, jack, that the those individual blacks would have been slaves whether they lived in America or Africa.

Sorry Ark but that's a rediculous statement. At the time they lived a traditional tribal life so they were taken from their homelands, families separated, brutalised on long voyages, then further brutalised on the deep south farms. If your comparing current day after the European takeover of most of Africa then maybe you have a case, but slavery was a couple of hundred years ago, a sad part of history but thats what it is, history.

SS: there would not have been any blacks in america without slavery. There was an economic demand for them sadly. If there were no such demand there would have been no blacks. Why would an America without slavery have blacks? Don't forget that most non-European immigration was banned from America before 1965. Remember, also, that Lincoln thought America was too cold for blacks, especially the union states, and that, they should be sent back to Liberia.

As you said, the unique parts of European slavery were the claim of property rights and its international nature. One other point about the American system was that after the banning of the slave trade -- 1806 -- the Americans, effectively, began to breed their own slaves. This was also unique and never happened in the Carribean or Brazil.

Ark mate I nominate you to be a University lecturer so you can EDUCATE today’s protesters on the reality and history of life. You can go back as many hundreds and thousands of years as you like life has always been a battle of survival and power. Life is not always fair and just, that is just life.
