Wtf is the story with this?

Statues been there 100s of years, why would anyone be scared of a statue? The only people that tear them down are Stalinists or Conquering Armies, I see it as out and out mob rule.

The non white mayor of London now is removing statues of white guys from 200 years ago if they don't accord with his pollical views.

Books will be next.

This is a dangerous step towards totalitarianism.

You forgot to mention the statue was of a slave trader. Very politically incorrect for England. Perhaps Melbourne could put up a statue of a priest shagging a Alter boy.

Well aware of who he is or was - once again why be scared of it??, and the question really should be why was it put up in the first place, because of all the other good work done. Slave trading was across the board at that time, the entire world economy was just part of it.

And even if it was doesn't justify angry mob taking law into own hands based in their set of political views. Fact is the Bristol statue had been debated in council many times and there was a consensus in the end it should remain - that how democracy works not with a mob of dickheads just ripping stuff down lawlessly.

And that's not the only statue planned for removal either, Robert Peel - ffs

Agree wholeheartedly abt mob rule anywhere but please try to be accurate, the london mayor and a lot of councils are REVIEWING them, nothing to do wit his values etc. Yes it is a sop to the mob but ...........!

I am in sort of 2 minds about this.

I can understand people objecting to the potent symbolism represented by a public statue of a slave trader (for example).

On the other hand, I wonder how far we go with revising history, and seeing everything through the prism of today's values.

Yep Something put up 200 years ago doesnt equate to today always, or even 2000 years ago, the Pyramids were built by slaves does that go as well?

But the objection I have is the sanctioning of an act of violence ( against property or persons) by one normally small group to gain a political end just because you dont agree with it or others views. Where does that lead us,,, a pretty dark place in my view.

One went this morning in London, no consultation just picked up and gone.

yep aware there is a "review"...but who says what is right and what is wrong and by whos morals.

We have a statue of a guy that killed a unarmed 14 yr old kid in cold blood in Perth ..I hate that , but Im not going to tear it down.

I don't disagree with both views jack but I think we need to remember the statue wasn't erected to celebrate him being a slave trader...it was erected for all the good stuff of a civic nature he did for Bristol.

Understand that BC ....... but was it the wealth he accumulated from the evil trade that enabled him do his later good deeds?
