Why blame young players who seek opportunities elsewhere because their pathway is blocked by AFL reserves players in their own club.

Mikeh, he was training with the league group regularly last season along with a couple of other Colts. He was assessed as not being ready both physically and mentally for reserves let alone league. At training with the colts he was sullen and quite petulant when he did not get his own way, kick it to me attitude and then did a richo if it wasn't.

He had a few run ins with the coach at the time, who tried to get him to understand what was required at the next level in the WAFL. The coach was a hard person but did a better than average job, in my opinion.

He was given the support to develop but when called upon in the games that mattered let himself and us down with his attitude.

As an aside, Clayton Giblett was given a few ressies games and has played league, albeit one game and he is the benchmark for the boys to follow. Great attitude, very good commitment to the game and club and if the boy had shown some of his characteristics then perhaps he might of got a game at the next level.

The boy was told all of the issues by EP, the AFL recruiters and by others but they and I all obviously missed the point, he is the next big thing!

I defer to your vastly superior knowledge of the "East Perth" colts' players. Perhaps by moving to West Perth he will realise that there are areas which he needs to address. More generally perhaps we need to move away from the concept that the ultimate is to be drafted at 18 and if one doesn't achieve that objective then all is lost.

Could not agree more but that is what parents junior coaches and others tell all lads and until they are more realistic then we will still have the issues. Same as uni being the be all!

Who should EP have left out of their team last year Mike so Keitel could play?

about ten players are currently playing at wafl clubs thinking that they are being kept out by afl reserves players.haere is my assestment of them

League Standard
SF Brock Higgins
EF Danny chartres,Boston Williamson
Sd jackson Slater

Depth/Reserves players
Perth Rowan Brooks,Ashley Boyes,Blake Borrett
EF julian Locantro
SD stephen Wityk,Tony Kamaleris
WP Chris Franklin

What's the point. You can blame the alignment for not getting a league game at East Perth but most of these players have not become automatic league selections at their new clubs.

C22 I will only speak about the two you mentioned at Swans. I am sure they were aware when they moved to Swans that if they performed they would be given the opportunity to play league footy for Swans.

With respect to your comment that they haven't become automatic league selections diverts from the fact that SO MANY thought that their pathway to league selection at the club formerly known as East Perth was limited by the host club alignment.

It isn't just the host club that limits oppurtunity. If you are a subi colt or reserves player you are likely to be squeezed out because every year they recruit 3 or 4 recruits from outside the club. All G7 cubs recruit from other wafl clubs or from the eastern states so could we say that some of their players are having their pathway blocked.

Thanks for that information Grump and for taking the time to reply. It certainly puts a different perspective on the issue. In that case, it will be interesting to see how he goes at West Perth. I suppose the point I was originally making was that the presence of Sinclair, Lycett and Mcinnes none of whom are East Perth based players could potentially be a barrier to a young tall in the same club who would be ready for league footy, but as you have pointed out there are a lot of other factors that feed into decisions that are made at clubs including that some kids may just not be ready to take the step into a league team

Subi are near on tarred with the same brush as the aligned clubs, mention any of the other 6 clubs and you are spot on the money.

last time i looked subi had to adhere to the same points cap as every other non-aligned team so can't for the life of me see how we're limiting opportunities for young blokes coming through like WART and FART and the other 6 teams aren't.

It has nothing to do with points but opportunity.Just as there is limited opportunities fo local players at aligned clubs you can make the same point for g7 clubs. At least 10 of last week's subi side came from outside their zone.I have had enough of this myth that because you are at a aligned club you arelimiting opportunities.Go thru g7 lists and you will find nearly all clubs habve a high proportion of recruits in the league side restricting a pathway for local juniors.thus endeth the lesson

Just on the topic of insufficient opportunities for the young players at East Perth. Shayne Hille another of last years colts and State 18 players has been listed in the League playing squad for the game against Perth may not get a run this week but certainly knocking on the door.
