Why were EF even talking to Cody who has a contract and on the required player list.

Yes it would seem that way except in the unlikely situation where Cody decides to rejoin the fold.
We are going to lose an experienced 1 point player. Sure, we get the cash but we are one player down and a replacement player of the same experience and ability will cost more points which are limited since the WAFL in it's wisdom reduced our points cap while increasing EF's. No win, win here.
