I don't understand with such low numbers of new cases how we can have such a conversely large number of deaths. You have to question the criteria being used now I would think. How many of these deaths would have occurred anyway with severe underlying health issues. What are the moral obligations of the extended family in a COVID-19 environment. Shouldn't our elderly grandparents if they are healthy enough, be cared for in a safe loving environment by their own families?

Hawk Eye I would question your statement saying "such low numbers" if we had 70+ cases in a day in WA or SA or TAS, the 3 states who have handled this the best, the states would be shut down tight as a fishes bum, just like the kiwi's did when that Auckland cluster appeared, they are now back on top of it but only by swift action and a disciplined population, something that many Victorians seem incapable of. The deaths are from infections a month maybe two months ago, many of these poor old folk have been fighting this insidious thing and on ventilators for some time but eventually lose their battle with it. there will always be a lag time between the reduction in the infection numbers and the reduction in the death rate. Linking or comparing Covid to the Flu is not realistic, Covid is exponentially more infectious than the flu.

There's pressure on Covid Dan to relax the restrictions and to announce a road map of doing so, but it needs to be linked to a target max number of cases per day. He should announce the relaxations, what they will be but that relaxation is dependent on the Vic people doing the right thing and masking, isolating getting tested etc, put the ball in their court and if it doesn't happen they can only blame themselves if the restrictions stay in place.

SS my apologies, I meant to say "low numbers of new cases as compared to other countries".
My concern over the last few weeks is that the Victorian death rate is very high as compared to countries who are getting over 1000 new infections each day. Often the numbers of deaths in those countries has been less than Victoria was getting.

I'd be interested in your response to our moral obligations with respect to our elderly being cared for in a safe loving environment by their own families?

With the huge amount of deaths from the flu annually, mainly the elderly and vulnerable, have we not been neglecting them for many years by not applying similar restrictions?

Interesting comment. My mother was 60yo when my father died unexpectedly. She said she was never to be put in a nursing home as she said " Once you are in there you become one of them ( a "vegetable" was her words) She went into a Legacy unit eventually & thoroughly enjoyed the freedom. She went into hospital aged 92 with kidney failure & died 2 weeks later. My children have been told it's the same with my wife & I. Care is often NOT CARE.

Hawk Eye, it's a commendable idea but I'm not sure too many people realise whats involved with caring for a very elderly person especially one with dementia, it's pretty much a full time job and often requires special material needs in relation to bedding and bathing, similar to that required for a disabled person, plus specialised dietary requirements and provision of medication which may be via pills or injections. Different for a reasonably healthy elderly person, living in a self care unit, they could quite easily be cared for at home if their retirement village or the like had the virus.

At the time of writing, Australia has just reached the virus death toll total of 654.
And victoria’s total number of deaths currently stands at 567.
Which accounts for 87% of Australia's fatalities.

Not a statistic to be proud of is it? I'd say (no pun intended) Dan is a dead man walking as Premier. There will be a lot of angry families that will vent their anger at the polling booth I dare say.
