Not really a photograph of an individual player like the excellent ones earlier, but certainly a good panorama of the old ground on a wet and misty 2nd September 1961. Bunton is in the foreground, and Gary Gray, Bob Manning, Kenny Bagley and Tony Sangalli are visible off in the distance. No banks and the scoreboard closer to the wing are a few obvious changes from today, but Bassendean hasn't changed that much. What we forget is that until 1976 the ground was one of the worse in the league for drainage, being one of the few suburban grounds with a clay substrate (WACA the other?, with the visible puddles of water in this shot rarely encountered by today's players.

6,500 at the ground that day...no guessing where they were seated.

Outstanding pic SH ...I actually didnt recognise it was "the home of football- Bassendean" at first glance but the old picket fence should have been a giveaway.

Great photos! I also recognise the tree on the Midland End of the ground which is still there to the left of the goals.

Not sure that it's Lamby but might be wrong.

Might take a punt on Ian Tucker or Gerry Cotter with that hair but just guessing now.

LH, spot on with Gerry Cotter ! That pic of old Basso is a pearler too.

Thought I'd keep this thread going. Swans vs East Perth, 15th May 1937. Taken by the government photographer for tourism brochures with a large format camera, this photograph (and two others in the set) is of better quality and resolution than the newspapers shots of the day that focus more on the play and not the landscape. This photograph is included in the recent book about Swans by Alan East but incorrectly captioned to 1933 (must be a typo – we didn’t have a team in 1933) but it is definitely mid-May 1937, for there is no correlation to any SD/EP games at Bassendean in the 1930s and the score clearly shown on the scoreboard. Points of interest are the fence on the right margin separating ‘Grandstand’ from ‘Reserve’ spectators – patrons had a choice in payment options and facilities – with the crowd density obviously different between grandstand (foreground) and reserve (background). The double gate at the Bassendean and Guildford ends are an artefact of the separation still visible today. Note also the tall tennis court fences in the far background, and the ‘polite’ placing of the visiting team’s score above the home team. This Idiosyncrasy is still seen in US college sport, but I do not know when it changed in Australia. The Darling Range remains unchanged…

Keith McInnerney (12), Charlie Avery (14) and Bert Randall (9) are the recognisable Swans players suggesting this SD’s backline, while at the other end, Ted Holdsworth kicked ten that day. I would only be guessing the East players – who, by the bye, are reigning premiers when this photograph is taken. Maybe an EP supporter can identify them.
