After a slow start, Swans played some fantastic running footy in the first half, quick transition from the back line often led by Nathan Broad who has become one of the most important players in the team. The Falcons mids were dominating the centre clearances but Swans were more than holding their own around the ground.
I thought the third quarter was where we lost it. We actually had the ascendancy for large parts of this quarter but wasted so many opportunities by reverting to a short passing game by hand and foot which invariably put the receiving player under pressure and then the inevitable turnover. Poor decision making and skill execution. I thought if we had done this better we could have turned for home with a 3 or 4 goal lead and that would have been defendable even with a tiring side, but good teams make you pay if you don't take your opportunities and West Perth did just that.
I couldn't be critical of the team for their effort, it was spot on for most of them but like all season it is poor skills under pressure that is costing us big time. I hate to say this because Ricky Cary is one of my favourite players , but I don't think he can justify his place in the team on that effort today. I would bring in Houghton next week. Dylan Nelson did enough to stay in the side and I wouldn't make too many other changes although I must admit to being gobsmacked when I heard Riddoch and Burnham were dropped for today because I didn't think either were playing that badly ( trying to qualify them for the ressies finals perhaps???)
It was a mixed day for Rudy as he kicked 5 goals but got reported apparently.
So now its come to the stage of the season where Swans are no longer in control of their finals destiny. They must dust themselves down and beat Claremont next week and hope that West Perth beat the Tigers in round 23.
I haven't seen any stats but I thought we dominated the clearances mate, we just coughed it up at the wrong times, they got a lot of their opportunities not through their good footy but through our fuck ups, I cant say it was an impressive win by WP, but they did enough at the finish when it counted. This will be a season where we know our very best footy is as good as if not better than anyone else's but these young guys need to learn how to play 4 Q`s something we have not done once this year. At least we know we will be around the place for many years to come with the depth of talent we have down the grades and coming through. I`m afraid it will have to be a day out of the box for WP or Clare (unlikely) like 2013 to beat $ubi, Peelmantle or ERT for the flag. I will order a massive plate of Mothballs to much on in a couple of weeks
