Another banana skin? corruption does not explain how a so called failed state was able to successfully hold an Olympics.

TM: since when has holding the Olympic Games been the measure of a failled state? -you do realise that Soviet Russia managed to hold the Olympics in 1980 don't you? Is that still around?

Some goes for South Africa mate - massive money was pummped into the country to hold the games.Durban was going to bid for the Commonewalth games but had to pull out for lack of funds.

Lets stick to Brazil - how could Brazil host the Olympics when the basic conditions and responsibilities of a sovereign government no longer function properly?

Care to explain what a failed state is doing holding the Olympic Games?

Failed state is going a bit far, but it was a mistake to hold them there, badly run, riddled with anti games protests, mass poverty in the country and money wasted on venues made a lot pretty angry, the attendances were pretty poor as well.

I remember seeing a doco a few years back on what has now become of the former Olympic stadia around the world and some from only this century like Athens were in a shocking state already, now disused, crumbling apart....such a largess of cash spent that really was a waste for barely 2 weeks of competition.

Yeah I saw that on Athens as well. total derelict heaps, all built on borrowed dodgy money as well, millions syphoned off via corruption as well, then again saw the venues in London all well kept and in active use . the stadium there is now home to EPL, West Ham.
