I agree that these awards (OAs and the like) should go to everyday Australians; the good, old Aussie battlers who are not after formal recognition but are more interested in doing something to benefit society.

Archie they do give these awards to ordinary Australians, a mates twin sister and her hubby got the OA for services to children in that they have fostered hundreds of kids over the last 40 odd years and adopted a few to go with their own. They're your average Jo and Joanne, he's a building supervisor and she's a child care worker but quite extraordinary in what they have done for underprivelidged and problem kids.

Ark my comment was in response to your statement that Brazil and Argentina are failed states - which they clearly aren't, whichever way their GDPs are expressed.

This country is Aboriginal land and always will be in my opinion. I have a deep love of this land but I have never felt less Australian. Too many people in this country with divided loyalties.

jack -- thanks for the reply -- Brazil fits the definition. It has hole slums the size of cities where there is little government control. Of course, if you are born into the tight family you can walk on or drave past. South Africa is much the same.

These people should have been rounded up while they were all there in one spot and dropped off where they are happier. Lucky they were a minority of a minoroty - so pretty small - dont know why the media give them any air time as they do nothing for their cause and create division, but they will NEVER be happy no matter what. Gladly most today including the majority of their own celebrated Australia Day. Move forward together FFS and this country will be even better!

Yep agree SD...those bloody protesters were almost as bad as someone on here wishing certain WAFL footballers would rip their hamstrings from the bone.

This whole BS is getting out of control that useless farkwit they call a Premier in Victoria has lost control of the place.

This so called protestor has clearly crossed the line, comments which are blatant Incitements of Violence against civil society in this country are totally unacceptable, not only that but they are well within the realm of sedition, she should be criminally charged by that laughing stock they once called the Victoria Police.

its time to hose all this crap down big time, its running off track like a runaway freight train.

I don't really get where your coming from Larry your comment seems a bit contradictory.
